I travelled to Costa Rica for 7 weeks in July and August of 2002. It was the best & weeks of my entire life. I visited all sides of the country from the northern pacific to the southern carribean, it was all spectacular.
I travelled Costa Rica as a backpacker, and thus, was able to see the real country and not just the showy resorts and hotels. Costa Rica has so much natural beauty to offer.
You will meet people everywhere you go, and you can travel throughout the country for very little money. in addition, Costa Rica is very near other Central American countries, so making side trips is very easy.
If I were to go again, I would try to visit some of the less travelled places and find more of Costa Rica's hidden secrets. Well known places tend to be populated more by tourists.
I would recommend Costa Rica to the adventurous traveller who loves the outdoors and has a strong heart for the natural world. Costa Rica provides a spirit that will live in you and keep your soul strong forever!
