“City with Colleges, which teaches & teaches & teaches…”

Coimbatore…as it is…

Coimbatore (Kovai) is the second largest city of Tamil Nadu state, located in the foot hills of Nilgiris. The city of Coimbatore is nothing but a city filled with Textile Industry and Colleges churning out more than 10000graduates every year. Unlike most of the TN city, Coimbatore is lot cooler and has the best climate, may be because its close proximity to 2 best hill stations of India, Ooty & Kodiakanal.

Let History talk about Kovai…

Coimbatore’s history if traced goes back to the early years when it was a small tribal village headed by Chief Kovan and his followers, who founded Kovanpatti a part of Kongunadu. But over the years the forests were cleared and a new village was formed called Kovanputhur, which is no known as Coimbatore.

People are its pillar…

It’s really amazing after staying in cities like Mumbai and Delhi, if you shift to a calmer city like Coimbatore; it usually becomes a culture shock. Though this may be a Cultural shock for many, but I have the habit of adjusting to places and this was definitely the case with Coimbatore. It was surprising to find, Coimbatore more of a Cosmopolitan city compared too many because you find people from different parts of India doing business here going hand in hand with the Cbre Culture.

Language they speak….

The population constitutes mainly of people from Andhra Pradesh, mostly Naidu’s who speak Telegu. Naidu’s had migrated to this place long time back, hence they are the main people of Cbre. Apart from AP, Cbre being the Textile capital of India, you would find lot of Marvadis and Gujrathi’s. As Cbre being in close proximity to Kerela, Malayalam is also a very important language and spoken by many. No doubt being in the state of Tamil Nadu, every one speaks Tamil in public hence Tamil comes as the over all language spoken here.

Dress they wear…

Though from every aspect Cbre is a cosmopolitan city, people here stick to their tradition and you would find most the Adults men in Lungis (Especially White Color) and guys in simple formals. As far as girls are concerned, they stick to Dhavni or Salwar Kameez or Saree. You would rarely find girls in Jeans & T-shirts. The most important part of a womens dress code will be the flowers in their hair, I think so without which they wouldn’t step out of their house. For guy’s you will find them putting the Sandalwood Tika or ash in their head. They are very devotional hence you would find temple in every corner of the road.

Food they eat…

Those who hate rice, please stay away because you will find everything made of rice. Dosa(Roast), Idli, Curd Rice, tamarind rice, lemon rice, coconut rice, rasam rice, sambar rice, puliodhare rice. But the best part of Cbre is that food is really very cheap, whether you eat in a 4star hotel like Residency or you eat in a local joint. You get Kerela paratha for 4Rs with delicious veg kurma. Most famous sweet of Cbre is the Mysurpa, which you will get in the most famous shop called Sri Krishna. Believe me I used to hate Mysurpa but after eating this, I have fallen in love with this sweet. Some of the famous joints are Aryaas, Annapurna, Nilgiris, Anjali, Appurva, Hot Kitchen, Khana Khazana, Domino’s Pizza(yeah you have Domino’s(I hate) here) & Coffee Pub(The only pub in Cbre(That too Non-Alcholic)). As far as shopping is concerned you can find the Food World, Nilgiris supermarket.

Rating for Food: 9/10

Education & Work…

Education…

The favorite past time in Cbre for children are studying, no I am not joking. Here you will find every child doing some or the other course from more than 100Colleges in and around Coimbatore. But if you ask them why you are doing this course, the answer will be my parents have told that the more courses you do more salary I will get when I pass out. But sadly that’s not true because the training given in most of the colleges is very theoretical, hence bookish knowledge is more. The thing lacking in the education system here is the Inter-personal skills which I feel is the most important aspect of Education.

The work they do…

Cbre has one of the Asia’s biggest Medical Transcription Centre run by the KG group, employing more than 3000people from in and around Cbre. The most important aspect of Cbre is that any business which is run successfully by one person becomes an inspiration for others to start in the same line, but the end result most of them shutting their shop early. The 3 major groups of Cbre are PSG, KG & Laximi group who run most of the Colleges & Textile mills. The workers of Cbre are mostly working for either the Pump Manufacturing Co. or the Textile Mills. Now, CBRE is looking for the I.T sector and my company is setting up the First International Call Centre for one of the above Group.

Places to visit…

The biggest problem in Coimbatore is that there are no places to visit in the city and your only source of entertainment is watching movies in the theatre. But if you really want to enjoy your weekend then you have to travel just 150Kms. You have Ooty which is 2hrs drive from Coimbatore; Kodiakanal is around 4hrs drive, Bangalore 5Hrs drive.

Lord’s Abodes…

There are lots of famous temples around Cbre, about 12 Kilometers away from Coimbatore Railway Station is the Marudhamalai temple of Lord Muruga. As the name suggests, the temple is situated on a hillock and the presiding deity is called Dhandayuthapani. Apart from this, the city has the Asia’s biggest Ganesh Temple, the Idol stand more than 25Feet. Apart from this lot of other temples close to Cbre, are Paini & Gurvayur

Reaching Cbre…

There are various ways of reaching Cbre. From Mumbai you have direct flights run by Jet & Indian airways, you have direct Kurla-Coimbatore express rail services, if you want to enjoy the Konkan Railways, then you have to Catch the Netravati Express, get down at Shurnoor and from their catch a train to Cbre which is only 2hrs duration. From Bangalore you have private Luxury buses run by Sharma & National Travels in the night time. The Airport here is well maintained and you have direct flights to Chennai & B’lore too.

Pocket full of smile…

Staying in Cbre is not at all expensive, you can live in Residency for Rs. 2000(40$)per day or stay in a normal hotel for as low as Rs600(12$). They have got a well nit internal bus services were the maximum ticket will be Rs 5. But don’t think of traveling in Auto Rickshaw, here it’s treated as Rich man’s luxury because it’s very expensive. Also, Cbre has a good network of Call Taxi; most of them are very affordable (Better than Rickshaws). Some CT numbers which you can use are 23-23-24/47-47-47.

I have tried to cover most of the information about the city because had to fight a lot with my Copernic Summarizer for editing my 5 page review, still if anything is missing you can M2M me.
