Just about everyone has part time jobs at some point of their lives from babysitting and lawn mowing to waitressing. The jobs you choose to apply for will be very dependant on your goal. I think part time employment falls into three categories (with overlap, of course)
First: ''It's the money, honey!'' These are the jobs you take purely for financial gain. Most of us have to work around school or family scheduling to earn money for school (yours or your child's), a car, to pay the bills etc. Waitressing or bar tending where the tips are high, telemarketing, fast food-all the jobs you love to hate fall into this category.
Second: ''It will look good on my resume (or college application)'' These are the jobs in which you try out possible careers or show you have experience in the field you want to pursue. Camp counselors, child care, hospital workers etc. This is a great opportunity to see the reality of the career you think you want to pursue. Usually these jobs don't pay as well. Many college students look for a few hours of this kind of work and do a second part time job for money.
Third: ''I have time and want to work for the fun of it'' Okay-this isn't a big group. Older people retired from a long career, people looking for a respite from a demanding field. These part time workers have the luxury of waiting until they can find a job they really enjoy. Working in a small bookshop works for me!
So before you take out the paper and start looking-figure out what the primary goal is for you. For summer or holiday employment the best jobs go early. Obviously you want to combine your goals whenever you can. A job that pays well, furthers your career goals and is a joy to do is serendipity.
Happy Job Hunting!
