Mothers. A very wise person once said that God couldn’t walk on Earth as his true self, so he took the form of mothers. A mother is the one who brought you into this beautiful world. A mother is the one who taught you to crawl, to walk, to run, all with your head held high. A mother is the one who encouraged you to be successful in life, keep your dreams and your hopes high and believe that nothing is impossible. A mother is the one who will stay by your side until the end and would do anything for you. A mother is the one who can never stop giving or caring for you. A mother loves you.

But, obviously, your relationship with your mother can never be perfect. I have argued with my mum(yes, it’s mum and not mom:P) more times than I can actually remember.  It could be about the pettiest things like not finishing my food, to talking too much(the irony is that I was taught to walk and talk by my parents, and they’re the ones who told me to sit down and shut up), to fighting about some abysmal marks I had in the past, to the future career I should choose.(Medicine…why does everyone love it so much?)

You know what though, I actually think that I’ve learnt from these arguments. Whenever my mum told me off about something I had done, I discovered that I nearly always never repeated the same mistake. And now I know, that all of the fights and the storming out of rooms were just to make me a better person, just so I could have a bright and sunny future, just because she loved me. There are those times(more often than not), when we have hour-long conversations about anything and everything as best friends. Because that is what your mother is. Your best friend.

Well, its my mums birthday, and Christmas is coming up too, so I’m going to have to get her some wonderful presents. But shh…you’re not allowed to tell her!;)

5. A bouquet of flowers:

Whatever age you are, a big bouquet of beautiful roses and tulips will be enough to make your day…if you’re a female…or a feminine male.(But that’s another story, another review.) Every time I gift my mum flowers, her reaction stays the same: a mini jump, a shriek, an ‘aww’(now you know where I get it from) and then she stays obsessed with them for the rest of the day. You may think this gift is predictable, but it’s better if its something she loves and predictable, rather than something she’ll never use and is unpredictable.(She’ll never admit it thought, she still finds the skipping rope I got for her when I was 6 “fabulous”. You know where I get that from too:-) Anyway, flowers smell lovely, look beautiful and generally personify the kind of person your mother is!:-)

4. A day out with the family:

My mum absolutely adores togetherness, where the whole family meets up and has fun together. It doesn’t matter whether we go to Alton Towers(she’s terrified of the rides so maybe not there) or Cambridge; her day is complete surrounded by the people who love her. For her birthday, my lovely family and I are thinking of taking her to London, visiting all of the sights, taking her Indian clothes shopping in Wembley(she loves that), going to houses of friends and family and finally finishing the day with a meal at an Indian restaurant.(Hehe, now you see where my love of India comes from!:P) Make sure you choose a place, which you’ll know she will be interested in, and will have the opportunity to enjoy with her family. So having a trip to the cinema is not very original, nor does sitting in silence and enduring Shahrukh’s half an hour long death bring much enjoyment.:-)

3. Sarees and CD’s:

Does your mum love songs from before she was born? Fikar not, because my mum does too! As much as I hate the intensely squeaky voices of the women, and the men who to me sound like they’re crying, I know that my mum loves them. So, I buy her the CDs she loves, and make an effort to listen to them, and you’d never predict that I actually liked one or two of the songs! Meri mummy ka taste kabhi galat nahi ho sakta!;-) And, occasionally, she loves the more recent music as well; some of our modern music choices are pretty similar! Like Mummy ko nahi hai patha!;-) Sarees and Salwaar Kamees’ are also a great gift for my mum, even though she owns one in every colour known to the world. But she has so many occasions to wear them to, that you can be sure she will manage to wear it at least once every 3 months.

4. What’s her hobby?:

Does your mum like cooking? Is she into sports? Does she love designing, painting and architecture? Whatever it is, you know your mum best and you know what her favourite things are. My mum’s hobby is cooking(don’t say I get that from her), so she always loves any gifts to do with the cuisine; from a table set, to a food processor, to pots and pans. And if anybody cooks her a meal, she would be over the moon!:-) If your mum likes sports, how about a day out at a golf course, or to go and watch some cricket. Designers and painters would love paintbrushes, paints, canvases, art galleries etc.

1. Love:

She cares for you, she gives for you, she loves you. What can you do in return? Give her some back. I know that my mum values my love above all of the material gifts I give her, and this is the least I can do for a person who has made me what I am today. Even a simple “I love you Mummy” will light up her face. My lovely Msians, go to your mothers today and tell them this, no matter if it’s not a special occasion. Because they deserve it!:-)

Maman, je t’adore.

Mutti, ich liebst du.

Mummy, I love you.

Don’t forget to RRC…:-)
