Chameli is publicized as the encounter between a prostitute and a man one rainy night. I am not sure whether the film will live up to its expectations but the music has surely exceeded my expectations.

Sandesh Shandeliya has orchestrated the music. I am truly impressed with this guy who composed the brilliant Suraj Hua from K3G and then went on to compose the enjoyable album of Rules-Pyar Ka Superhit Formula. With Chameli, he has struck gold once again. Ably supported by lyricists Irshad Kamil and R.N.Dubey, and singer Sunidhi Chauhan, he has fashioned an album that is definitely going to establish him as one of the leading music directors we have today and one of my personal favorites.

Presenting my review of each song:

Baaghe Re Man Kahin – Sunidhi Chauhan

Behta Hai is arguably the best song of Chameli. The last time I heard a beautiful rain song was from the movie Thakshak – Boondon Se Baatein.

Flutes and guitars create a sober, yet playful rainy atmosphere as a woman freely professes her wish to fall in love. Steady, westernized beats symbolize the pitter-patter of raindrops. ‘Mast Mahol’ Sunidhi excels in a song that proves her versatility in singing by beautifully projecting the innocence in the heart of a prostitute.

The lyrics fascinate the listener. Picture this:

Behta hai Man Kahin

Kahaan Jaante Nahin

Koyi Rok Le Yahin

Bhaage Re Man Kahin

Aage Re Man Chala

Jaane Kidhar Janoon Na

Meaning: My heart flows into an unknown destination. Someone stop it. It’s running somewhere, leading me to some place unheard. In essence, the lady protagonist imbibes the secret desire to fall in love and she joyously declares her feelings amidst warm raindrops.

A surefire chartbuster – 10/10

Sajna Ve Sajna – Sunidhi Chauhan

Sajna Ve Sajna is a typical Sunidhi Chauhan song! She sounds deep and, at times, manly as she lends her voice to this bar dance shown in trailors. Sandesh uses slow electronic beats to craft an aura of a discotheque and uses sarangis and tablas to lend a medium-paced classical rhythm to it. The lyrics are mediocre. But some lines do stand out and convey the passion in the prostitute’s body and heart. For example:

Tujhe bar loon apni aankhon me

Phir in aankhon ko kholoon na

Kholoon apni baton me

Phir is duniya se boloon na

Meaning: I’ll fill you in my eyes and never open them again. I’ll address you when I talk and will never talk to this world again. IN other words, you are only mine!

Sajna Ve will take some time to grow on you – 7.5/10

Jaane Hua Hai

My personal favorite from Chameli, Jaane features three times in the album. The first song is a duet by Udit Narayan and Sunidhi Chauhan; the second song is a duet by Javed Ali and Sunidhi Chauhan; the third song is a solo by Sunidhi Chauhan. All the songs have the same lyrics but the music and singing is so enchanting that the listener doesn’t mind listening to them repeatedly.

Each and every version is extremely romantic, poignant, and soul-stirring. Sandesh has hit bull’s eye with his creative use of western instruments such as the saxophone and guitar. The music is soft and the singers do an excellent job.

Udit Narayan and Javed Ali are at their vocal best, as both of them ease through the song – the former sounding deeper and more mature, and the latter sounding young and fresh. But it is Sunidhi who ultimately steals the show with her mellow ‘hush-hush’ voice. She sounds a lot like the pop-singer Sunita Rao from Pari Hoon Main. Jaane gives Sunidhi another chance to display her wide vocal range as she alternates between the low and high pitch with ease.

Jaane boasts of wonderful https://lyrics. Almost every line defines love using beautiful comparisons! The beginning lines are thus:

Bheegi hui koi shaam vo,

Mehka hua koi naam vo,

Bin bath hi hoti hai neelam vo,

Mashhoor hai phir bhi badnaam ho,

Jaane hua hai aaj kya hame na hum

Jaane kyun humko yaad aaye vo

Meaning: It is like a wet evening; it is like a fragrant name; it is sold even without speaking a word; it is famous, yet infamous; I don’t know what’s happened to me – why do I remember him/her.

IN effect, two lovers are remembering each other and, using similes, confess that they have fallen in love. My favorite simile is: Sheher Ki Dhoop Si Bevakth Jalegi. That is, love is like sunshine in the cities - totally unpredictable. You never know when your heart is going to burn with passion, you never know when you are going to fall in love!

Beautiful: 10/10

Yeh Lamha – Sunidhi Chauhan

Yeh Lamha shares its theme with the title track of KAL HO NA HO – Live life to the fullest today and enjoy every moment, because it is unsure whether you will be able to embrace this wonderful moment tomorrow.

Sandesh displays his fondness towards western music once again as guitar and drums dominate the entire track and make the song rhythmic and enjoyable! Sunidhi has a ball since this song is right up her alley. Sounding sexy, she also exhibits a powerful control over her voice and the tune. The lyrics are interesting and keep up with the sunny theme of the song.

For example:

Thaki thaki si shaam phir jawaan hone lagi.

Ujalon ne churaye hain raat ke sab nishaan bhi abhi

Kal Mile Na Mile Kya Pata Kal Kahaan…..

Aa Savaroon Tujhe Ki Jee Loon Main Ye Lamha”

Meaning: The tiring evening has become youthful. Dawn has erased every spot of the dusk. I am not sure if there is a tomorrow. Hence, let me embrace today and live this moment.

On the other hand, picture this:

Aasmaan se utarta shor

Chamak raha hai por por…

Jhilmilathi hui ye raat gaathi hui…

Ek suhagan si raat

Ye suhana samaa”

Meaning: The sky grows silent. Every inch of the night glitters. This twinkling night sings. Like a wedding night, this night is beautiful. Let me enjoy it.

Interesting: 8.5/10

Soul of Chameli – Chameli – Sax performed by Tala

It has become a fashion to include either an instrumental piece or an English song in every other album these days! Keeping up with his legend that began with Rules – Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula, Sandesh includes a sax piece of Jaane in Chameli. The pitch alternates between the bass and the treble, and although the Soul of Chameli isn’t as gripping as the aforementioned three versions of the song, it still makes for a good listen.

Nice: 8/10

To wrap up my review, Chameli is a fascinating mix of love, passion, and happiness. Sandesh is a very talented music composer and it’s high time he is given credit for his intellect! Sunidhi, on her part, establishes her musical genius with this album. Do not waste your time! Go grab it!

Overall Rating: 8.75/10
