Hotel Kailas is located near the Shivmurti which is outside the Haridwar railway station. It is a big three floored hotel with multiple rooms. The room in which we stayed had a big cooler, TV but didn’t have a gezer. The rent was rupees six hudred per day. Later I learnt that the rent was negotiable. If I had haggled I would have got the same room or even better room for rupees five hudred. The accomodation is basic. There are rooms with gezer too.
There are room boys to provide service. But the service is pathetic. They are too reluctant to bring you a glass of water or hot water for bath. I had to personally go out, climb down the stairs and tell about the same to the Manager. Even after telling the same I had to wait. The same stands true for the bedsheets and bedspreads.
There are rooms with balconies. But the balconies open on the main road which has heavy traffic at any point of time. There is chaos when the Ganga Aarti gets over at the har ki paudi. So the balcony will not be a luxury but a nuisance. But the interiors of the rooms with balcony is better compared to the other rooms. There is in house basic restaurant too, but it provides only room service. There was so much variety to eat outside, so I had no opportunity to eat from the inhouse restaurant.
I was going to check out at six am in the morning. I had come from the trip to badrinath and was tired. I slept early. At around eleven pm there was a knock at my door. When I did not choose to reply the door was knocked incessantly. It was the room boy asking for chai-paani. I told him that I will tip him when I check out the next morning. He said that his duty was over at eleven in the nigh and he will not be there the next morning. Reluctantly I paid him twenty rupees. I was taken aback with this kind of service, where you wake up your sleeping customers at night only to ask for your tip. Again he wasn’t happy with the twenty rupees tip. He wanted more.
The next morning when I checked out, there were other room boys asking for tip too. I told them that I had already paid the tip at the night, that too after getting up from my bed in which I was peacefully sleeping. I didnot pay any tip to the other boys because I was unhappy with the previous night’s experience.
