Yash raj films are always awaited with curiosity specially after the three superhits they delivered last year(Dhoom ,Hum Tum & Veer Zaara) .So like all regular movie-goers I too bumped into a nearby theatre this friday. With ‘Banty Aur Bably’ Yash raj movies has added another feather to their cap .This 2nd venture of Shaad Ali (after the successful debut in saathiya) is surely going to strike a chord with the audience .
The story is basically about two ambitious youngsters (or rather pranksters) who hail from some imaginary small towns like ‘phursatganj’ and ‘pankhinagar’ (somewhere in U.P.), having their ambitions higher then sky. Each has their own set of problems but two things are common between them .The altercations with their parents and their larger than life dreams. Rakesh (abhishek bacchan ) doesn’t want to waste his life by becoming a railway T.C. like his father(Raj Babbar), so one day he ran away from his home .Rimmi (Rani Mukherjee),who aspires to become ‘Miss India’ some day is fed up of the constant pressure of getting married (that too with a guy who has the record of scoring 10/10 in each subject during his schooldays).So in order to fulfill her dreams she also elopes from her home and both meet at a railway station.
After trying their luck for some time they realize that their dreams are not going to come true unless they reach the city of opportunities ie. Mumbai, but neither of them has the required amount of money , so apply all necessary tricks to overcome this problem .Together they start deceiving people all around U.P.(with their respective names as banti and babli ) and finally they manage to land up in Mumbai .But at this juncture suddenly they realize that this is not what they wanted instead what they want is what they were doing till then so they decide to transform themselves into ‘banti and babli’ forever. Earlier they were doing this for need but now they decide to do it for just fun .
The twist in story comes with the arrival of a workaholic cop Dashrath Singh(Big B) who is adamant on catching ‘banti and babli’. One day the couple decide to do their last job, where they get identified by Big B but with the help of a kind sardar (Prem Chopra) ,they manage to ran away. In the end after the arrival of their new born baby they decide to quit all this and return to their home where they finally are caught .But as the story had to end on a happy note (yash raj tradition) so Dashrath Singh allows them to return back..
Both the lead actors have tuned in to fine performances .Abhishek has once again delivered after yuva and Rani is Rani ,chirpy and vivacious. She is simply hilarious in the scenes when shy starts crying. Amitabh unfortunately has been offered a loud role which is quite irritating specially in his first few scenes, but he spells his magic and turned it into a lovable character. The director was not sure whether Amitabh’s character was for evoking laughter or was about an honest police officer.However he should be praised for inducing a fresh concept.
The first half of the movie is just amazing and quite well-paced .Post interval portions are little slower but then also story keeps u glued to the seats. Music has always been a strong element in ‘yash raj’ movies but here we are disappointed as except ‘dhadak-dhadak’ all the other songs are passable affairs, also the item number (a quawali) featured on Aishwarya Rai. Aishwarya showing her cleavage after a long long time is really hot. This may be disliked by family audience but definitely not by we guys(anybody disagree??).
Some of the sub-plots in the story are indeed refreshing like selling of ‘tajmahal’ then the father-son’s first encounter in a bar, also the sequence where Rani first tries to get the entry to ‘Miss India’ contest.
Though every film has its own loopholes but in this film two of the mistakes were just indispensable
(1. How can police wasn’t able to get the sketches of ‘banti & babli’ specially because babli was always without any make-up during the forgeries.
(2. What was the need of lifting reserve bank gold when babli was about to deliver a child keeping in mind that they were doing that without any specific reason.
But overall the movie was an enjoyable affair .I would definitely recommend it to every one. It’s a refreshing change from the two shiver-givers (nazar and naina) which arrived last week. Go and meet ‘BANTI AND BABLI’ before their journey comes to an end.
