It’s a by & large enjoyable movie…. Not a total leave your brains at home types (the usual Jim Carrey stuff)….somewhat funny, somewhat sentimental in-between kinds.
Bruce (Jim Carrey) is TV news reporter, whose life is not going through very smoothly….so he start’s complaining about God’s injustice to him…so when God (Morgan Freeman) gets tired of hearing Bruce's complaints he offers Bruce his all-encompassing job, giving him absolute power for a week hoping to prove that running the world is not an easy job…& then there is havoc……& since havoc - humour - Jim Carrey are soul mates the movie is a good watch. The story of’course ends with God succeeding in his mission and everything falling into place.
The negative sides of the movie are its predictable story line (man learns a lesson from God), the fact that Jim Carrey does not seem too convincing or comfortable as a TV reporter and the rather sentimental ending… I mean sentiments & Jim Carrey are difficult together.
The character of Jim Carrey is typical whiny ‘WHY ME ???’ kinds & is quite real & believable. The dialogue between Carrey & Freeman is witty & refreshing. Freeman is good and balanced as usual. All this and the fact that Jim Carrey is not over doing his comic expressions all the time make it a smart & enjoyable movie ...although the Carrey fans may say that his talents were totally under utilized.
