Till some time back, a typical day for a typical tamilian like me started in a typical manner with a typical cup of coffee made from typically and freshly made coffee decoction.

First coffee of the day and First love have a lot of similarities. They both infuse energy into you for the life and the day ahead. Even after they are long gone, their effect remains. You have sweet memories. And before you start dreaming, lets move on.

I don’t remember how I fell in love with coffee.

~ Was it love at first smell? Is this why they say that love is blind?

~ Was it an adolescent crush or a childhood sweetheart?

~ Maybe its the divine love I carried forth from my previous birth.

What I distinctly remember is my vacations at grandparents place in a small village in Tamilnadu. The coffee beans were freshly roasted, freshly ground in a small table-top grinder, and when the boiling water was poured over the coffee powder in the filter, the aroma would waft through the kitchen to the hall and make me wake up and smell the coffee literally!

Once back from vacation, I would want to stay away from coffee. Not that my love waned, but more so because we never did get good coffee powder in Delhi! It was a precious commodity. A good coffee powder was only expected when someone from TN visited us after 36 hrs of train travel!

Post marriage and after moving to Mumbai, things did improve. I realized that I wasn’t alone in swooning for that cup of coffee. My inlaws and DH were addicted too… if not as much as me. We stayed in a South Indian dominated area. And somehow Mumbai seems more equipped with South Indian specialties. And yet, this wasn’t the same coffee I had enjoyed down south!

So, I lived with it! Of course, there were times when the coffee came close to what I was missing. But such occassions were quite far and in between.

One fine day, there was a crisis in my kitchen. No, it was not cockroaches. The coffee powder had got exhausted. As I went scurrying to my usual shop, I realized it was the weekly day off. So, I had no other go but to try one of those instant coffees. Nescafe and Sunrise had never appealed to my taste buds much. I opted for Bru and I can vouch that Bru is closest to the filter coffee I have always loved.

Some information courtesy Google

Bru, launched in 1969, under the umbrella of Brooke Bond, has a blend of 70% coffee and 30% Chicory which makes those kaapi memories come alive. It combines convenience and tradition to give you a truly aromatic cup of coffee.

Available in bottles and packets of 50, 100, 200 gms, they are overpriced when compared to powdered beans but then my tongue controls me at times!

There are some more variants of the original BRU available now. Deluxe Green Label, relaunched as Bru Roast & Ground with 53% Indian coffee beans and 47% Chicory. Bru Malabar Roast & Ground in select geographies. I have heard of Bru Cappucino too. Never tasted it!

Some interesting fact :

Brooke Bond was a brand-name tea retailer in the United Kingdom. Brooke Bond & Company was founded by Arthur Brooke who was born at 6 George Street, Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire, England in 1845. He opened his first Tea Shop in Manchester, Lancashire. There was never a "Mr Bond"; Arthur Brooke chose the name simple because it sounded pleasing to his ears.

Preparation

You can make it before you spell COFFEE. Add a teaspoon of Bru to hot milk. Add sugar as per taste. Mix well and sip! If you have the davara-tumbler (the special cup saucer of TN), you can create a frothy kaapi too.

I havent tried cold coffee with Bru. But I guess it should taste good.

Advantages of drinking coffee (read BRU ):

  1. Coffee can increase the metabolism rate up to 30% .

  2. Coffee with exercise when taking 300mg, averages a 20% increase in energy and fatigue, while burning fat increased 107% greater than without caffeine.

  3. Caffeine in coffee keeps our brains alert and receptive of new information.

  4. Regular consumption of coffee decreases the risk of type II diabetes and many other health risks.

  5. Bru especially comes with nice free gifts! Jars and bowls. Last time I got a bottle of brown sugar free... keep guessing which one!

Disadvantages:

  1. Coffee when consumed in excess can be addictive, stimulate, and a mood charger.

  2. A large amount of caffeine consumed all at once can have a negative affect on blood sugar levels that influences fat burning that could change into storing fat.

  3. Too much coffee over time can stain your teeth.

But then, with so many benefits of coffee /Bru, moderation is the answer for the few disadvantages. ----------------------

But I pledge my devotion to coffee in general and BRU in particular.

BOTTOMLINE: Nowadays, a typical day for a typical tamilian like me starts in a typical manner with a typical cup of coffee made from typical BRU!
