Corsets to saris, pianos to bhangra beats, Balle balle! Amritsar to la directed by gurinder chadha of Bend It Like Beckham fame has it all. Most of all, it is an apt example of crossover cinema with the fusion of east meets west which we have seen before in a whole lot of films starting with manoj kumar?s purab aur paschim.
Balle balle!?. Works because it is a complete bollywood masala film comprising of romance, heartbreaks, lavish sets, cheerful songs & funny moments to carry back home. The director deserves praise for entwining jane austen?s novel pride & prejudice with the right ingredients. Cinematography by santosh sivan is top-notch. Aishwarya Rai, the global gal as lalita bakshi is awe-inspiring.
The confused american darcy in martin henderson is passe who has no emotions attached to him. Nadira babbar, seen after a long hiatus is fantastic as lalita?s mother. Anupam kher is as usual dependable. Namrata shirodkar, meghnaa kothari & ashanti, the american singing sensation excel in their short roles.
Overall, balle balle!amritsar to la is a typical gurinder chadha product full of funny moments & will definitely work with the masses if not with the classes.
