Ho hum!! Here comes another review on this most watched and much admired movie... But I am writing this review because I really feel that the essence of this movie may not have been touched out here...

So before I begin with the real meat, let me just talk about the nuts and bolts of this movie:

Cast: Mel Gibson, Patrick McGoohan, Sophie Marceau, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine McCormack,

Director: Mel Gibson

Cinematography: John Toll

Music: James Horner

The Plot:

Mel Gibson, as William Wallace fights for the freedom of his land after the brutal murder of his wife. On the way he is touched by the beauty and sincerity of Britain's to-be Queen (Sophie) and ends up portraying one of his best roles so far.

The strong points of the movie are its breath taking cinematography and brilliant music scores. John Toll and James Horner have used the Scottish moors, mountains and melodies beautifully. See it to believe it. Mel Gibson also has shown his brilliance both in acting and directing.

Strong scenes are the ones in the battlefield, when Mel Gibson delivers a stirring speech to his fellow brigands (freedom-fighters), the scene when Mel Gibson is betrayed (watch his eyes in this one...brilliant), and the heart wrenching climax....too much

What do I feel??

Ahaa, now we come to what I wanted to say... What does this movie really stand for? Do you think it means that, what-is-mine-is-mine-and-not-yours?? Or maybe you think that it's a remarkably patriotic movie with a free-my-country-cry? NO, NO, NO...

This movie stands for Freedom of Choice. To hell with all the historical errors and beautiful scenery and heart warming music, what the movie is saying at it's core is that,

''I will not interfere with your reality, but please do not interfere with mine. I was born a free bird, let me remain that way.''

What we see everyday is that this basic, oh so human way of life is mauled, brutalised and then trashed. Nobody but nobody is happy letting others live as they want to.. Right from our birth we are told by our parents, teachers, friends and peers that we must conform. There are no two ways of doing things. My way is the only way. This movie seeks to break that way of life.

Human beings are so used to being open to the lower energy fields that it is difficult for them to even imagine there is another way to live, that people will be good, if left to their own devices. We are all inherent cowards who are afraid of the unknown. Thus we bind everyone and everything to the familiar... But that is surely not the recipe for greatness...Why do none of us see this?? It sometimes amazes me when parents stifle their children. What exactly are they hoping to achieve??

As Gibran says

''Your children are the window to tomorrow. Do not attempt to see their world, for even in your dreams you cannot comprehend it.''

Yet the whole world remains sold on this crazy idea. Sort of stupid eh?? In the movie Mel Gibson as a child sees the brutal murder oh his father and uncle. This had the potential to make him a bitter man who wants only revenge. But his long lost uncle returns and takes him away, teaches him, shows him the world, broadens his horizons. He returns a changed man.. What a brilliant way to show that violence doesn't necessary create violence, when arrested very young.

And then there are the hate mongerers, who love to tear anything and everything apart. They walk around spreading venom wherever they are. This can never be a solution. how can we put out a fire by throwing more fuel into it??In the movie, Mel Gibson is not shown as inherently violent. He only loses it when they murder his wife. Live by the sword and you will die by it. Again societies rule, creates the whole problem!!

Watch this movie to see what I am saying. And if you have seen it, then please see it again and try to visualise what I am saying...This is not an attempt to sell this movie per se, but rather to show everyone, what underlying message this beautifully made movie delivers...:-)

Picture a world where no one restricts the other from achieving his/her full potential. We would all be Einstein's, Beethoven's, RD's and Buddha's.

Cheers
