Branded vs Assembled computers

What would you prefer....A branded computer guaranteed to perform well as it has the assurance of the company....or an assembled one which can be self configured and is cost effective as well.

In our country, where a computer on the  verge of transformation from a luxury item to a household commodity, I would definitely go in for an assembled computer. An assembled computer costs less as compared to branded one but can have almost all the features of the former.

If you are thinking that only by buying a branded computer one can be assured of procuring genuine parts, then you are mistaken; for nowadays many agencies dealing with assembled computers have succeeded in convincing the buyers about the ingenuity of their products. They provide the customers with the detailed proof of the components used. Moreover many assembled computers come with a warranty.

According to a computer consultant who happens to be my buddy, the ideal hardware of an assembled computer which has the latest features and is cost effective as well is as follows :

#Intel Pentium 4 processor 2.4 GHz

#Intel Chipset motherboard

#256 KB Intergrated L2 Cache

#256 MB DDR SDRAM (333 MHz)

#40 GB HDD - 5400 RPM

#4 x DVD + Writer Combo drive

#32 MB AGP

#56 K internal modem

An assembled computer with the following configuration would cost roughly around Rs.33, 000 as per date, while a branded would cost anything from Rs.38, 000 to Rs.45, 000.

So what would you prefer? The decision is yours....
