I was returning from my trip to the cinema with my cousins on the train home. Being the peak hour, we were compelled to stand up whilst a cluster of two year olds had whole seats to themselves. (Did mummy and daddy’s laps take a nap?) Distraught at the unfairness of the situation, I refrained from boring my cousins with my exhaustive and incessant chatter, and preceded to reflect on the wonder I had just witnessed. (Thinking twice in two weeks…it’s amazing!)

It was true; when I had first entered the cinema hall, I was fully expecting not to be able to take my eyes off Abhishek Bachan and say the film was “fabulous” regardless of whether it was or wasn’t. But this movie made me look beyond his face and focus on his true character in the movie. Although a light comedy, this film gave any viewer so much to ponder on.

“The only truth in the world is that I love you” are the wise words of a true con man. How do you figure out if he’s telling the truth or not?

And with that rhetorical question, the train bumped to a stop. I, lost in my thoughts happened to fall onto my cousin, who incidentally also knocked my other cousin over. She landed on a middle-aged couple that were extremely startled by the collision. The husband didn’t seem to be too unhappy about it, but his wife kept on giving him and us evil stares throughout the remainder of the journey.

So what’s the betting that this one of the millions of con men in the world used the phrase “The only truth in the world is that I love you” to console his wife? I’d bet my hat (it’s very expensive, by the way) on it.

::::Yeh kya horaha hai…what’s the film about?::::

Meet Roy. He’s cool, he’s smart, he knows when to be serious, and he knows when to have fun. But he’s one sly con master; the leader of them all. Everything in his life is based on a lie; his money earned through conning, his house bought through making other people’s lives miserable, his ‘original’ dress sense inspired by those fish he catches with his fishing rod of ingenuity, and his fishing hook of subtlety.

Meet Simmi. She’s sweet, she’s innocent, and she’s straightforward. She believes in living a respectful life, and has decent values, which she is intent in following, no matter what. She’s pretty, lovely and smart and Roy is head over heels for her. Her love is also pure.

The first great thing about this film; the love story is already present, so we don’t have to sit through three hours of Shahrukh darling match-making with the accompaniment of his violin and a few leaves. In fact, Roy and Simmi get engaged within the first ten minutes of the movie. However, coincidentally Simmi’s family are close friends with a rich film producer who Roy had previously scammed of a huge sum of money. Predictably, angelic Simmi gives naughty Roy his engagement ring back.

Torn by his heartbreak (Roy: main hoo naa!), Roy chances upon another con-master, who is although pretty good at scamming, is still an amateur compared to Roy himself. This character goes by the name of Dittu. With some strong persuasion (and annoying wheedling) from Dittu, they become swindling partners, with Roy as the mentor and Dittu as the apprentice. Along the way, Roy discovers something, which leaves him shattered, but with some help from Dittu and his doctor friend, he views every moment optimistically.

He and Dittu rush off to con a big criminal Chandru for revenge (the best man in the movie…great names, great people), who had stolen a very large sum of money from Dittu’s father. Well, although absolutely dangerous, Chandru definitely has a lot of self esteem (who else would worship a mirror?) But will the brains of two conmen be enough to fool him? What will happen to Roy and Simmi’s incomplete love story? To find out; watch the movie! And trust me, you’re in for a massive surprise.

:::: Parde ke peeche…who’s in it?::::

Abhishek Bachan as Roy: What can I say? His acting was wonderful, one of the best performances I’ve seen all year. (And no, this isn’t biased…) He could carry off funny one-liners with ease, but made the audience empathise with him when he was sincere too. Though his clothes were probably stolen from the nearest circus (well, you cant expect everything to be perfect can you?), he still managed to look as stylish and charismatic as ever! Abhishek is undeniably the name on everybody’s lips this season.

Riteish Deshmukh as Dittu: This movie was so good that it even made this guy look like he could act! Riteish was the light humour in this movie, his naivety and stupidity made his character so much more believable! Admittedly, he looked very comical when he tried to act forlorn and sincere, however generally I would say this film is his best yet.

Priyanka Chopra: This movie brought out Priyanka’s acting abilities too; she proved that she could handle the more sentimental roles as well as that of a love-starved lunatic. She looked just right for the part; and yes as many people have said, Abhishek and herself shared great chemistry…but not the best! (hint hint)

Nana Patekar as Chandru: This guy stole the show; his supposedly dangerous yet incredibly humorous antics made anyone want to laugh their heart out! He proved that he could do comedy, as well as the more serious roles that he has undertaken in the past. He definitely lived up to his name! :D

Boman Irani as the loyal doctor: Yes, he plays a doctor again! Although his role wasn’t as large as it was in Munnabhai MBBS, his comical antics are still visible in ever scene he’s in; especially the ones where he tries to murder Dittu! He also had some serious lines in this movie and he said them so sincerely that they could inspire anyone.

::::Aashiq banaya…who made it?::::

Rohan Sippy, who has definitely mastered the art of entertaining his audience, directed Bluff Master. Every different setting within the movie was beautiful, and fitted in with the context of its position very well. I loved the way the film paused whenever a new character was introduced into the movie and gave a profile of their names; this technique definitely made it more interesting.

Many of the scenes are absolutely hilarious, so this movie is definitely a ‘must-see’ whenever you need a bit of cheering up. I particularly loved the scenes between Dittu and Abhishek; not only did Abhishek’s gorgeousness make up for Riteish’s unattractiveness, but the two made a great partnership. (No dodgy ideas guys…badhu normal che!) I also loved the funny one-liners, and some of the serious philosophy twined in between the humour. Although the story is lifted from a Hollywood production, I think it has been put together fabulously.
