INTRODUCTION

This review is on the Malayalam movie, ''Black'' which was released some months ago and not on the currently running Amitabh-Rani starring movie. Mamooty, after acting in the poor movie ''Aparichitan'', did make a come back in the movie ''Kaazcha'' and the good form was followed in ''Black'' which showed the acting skills of this star in a better way.

The movie has got the caption - ''The man from Darkness'' and that is exactly what the character of Mamooty is! By making a different movie, director ''Renjith'' has done a fantastic job. ''Ambalakkara'' song is one of the best picturised songs of the year and it is another major characteristic of this movie.

THE PLOT

Black is based on the underground activities in the city. Shanmughan (Mamooty) plays a hitman who does his job with perfection. On the top of the underworld stays a man, David Carlos Padaveedan (Lal) who is a friend of Shanmughan who does anything for him.

A newly appointed police officer Ashok (Rehman) tries to clean up the city from the criminals, but fails to do so as he is killed by Padaveedan. Shanmugan is not very happy about the death of Ashok, and creates some indifference between the friends. After he finds his own daughter, he wants to live a peaceful life, but the transformation was not acceptable to Padaveedan and he wants Shanmughan dead.

This changes the situation and as Shanmughan asks City Police Comissioner (Babu Antony) for aiding him to kill the gangsters, he could only speak about putting them in jail. This leads to Shanmughan going against the criminals and eliminating them one by one.

At the same time, Padaveedan is ready for the arrival of his old friend and current enemy - the man from darkness. Where will this fight end? This is all what Black consists of.....

PERFORMANCE

Mamooty has managed to do the different role which was handed over to him in a perfect way. He just seemed the right choice for the role. Rehman looked very energetic in his come back role as the determined, self-confident police officer.

It was a different role for Babu Antony too as he is the ''clean shaved'' Police Comissioner and not the usual fiery villain with long hair and beard (just like Gillespie).

Lal is not bad as the main villain, but I couldn't be much impressed by him as he doesn't look as cruel as the character should have been. Shriya Reddy plays the small role which may be called that of a heroine.

Women roles seemed very acute in the movie. Prem Kumar also comes up with small role, which seemed rather irrelevant to me. Janardhanan does justice to his small role too.

The movie has lots of action and violence, followed by some sentiments. The movie has proved one of the favourites of audience. It may be due to the fact that there was no better movies released those days, but trust me, this is a nice movie to watch. A well-made movie comes only after a long time these days.....

Director: Renjith

Lyrics: Kaithapram

Music: Alex Paul

Starring: Mammootty, Lal, Shreya Reddy, Rehman, Prem Kumar, Babu Antony, Janardhanan etc
