Bend It Like Beckham is the next British-Asian flick after East Is East or as some of you lot who live in India will know it as East Phir Be Hai East.
Bend It Like Beckham stars Parminder Nagra, Anupam Kher, Shaheen Khan, Archie Panjabi, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Keira Knightley. This flick is about a girl played by Parminder who has a really good talent that hardly anyone knows apart from her boy-mate. What is this talent???? Bending a ball like Beckham of course. This girl secretly plays football as her parents get really angry whenever they find out of what she does in the park. Without her parents knowing she joins a football team only for girls and makes a great impression and also goes to matches by telling her parents that she is going to visit her aunties and uncles!!!!!!
As time goes by her parents find out the real truth and she is later forced to leave her football dreams locked up and help her family in her sister's wedding. As if things were not bad enough, Parminder falls in love with her male coach which is not good as he is Irish and another problem is that her best friend who introduces her to the football team also fancies the coach! Does this remind you of a bollywood story? Does to me!!!!!!
Parminder there on her sister's wedding trying to enjoy herself but the only thing that she can think of is the football game and the coach! But then Anupam Kher comes and tells her that she can go play the second half of the game but she must be back for the rest of the wedding! Hmmmm...Bollywood alright!
So Parminder plays the game and wins and goes back to her sister's wedding. As time goes on and Iam watching the hands tick on my watch...it turns out that Parminder's parents finally agree with Parminder going to America and playing for the football team over there-but that is only thanks to Anupam Kher. Where's the love? Well Parminder promises the coach that she will come and then they will try to get married if they can?!?!?! you know the parents!!!
Overall the movie was disappointing and I was expecting humour most of the way through...there was nothing of the sort. Bend It like Beckham was fine through the beginning but after the first half hour it lost it's jist there were a few other funny moments but still the movie lies as a disappointment. I went with only a couple of my mates to watch this flick and they will find anything funny (yes they are really weird particularly them two whom I went with, lets hope they do not read this!)-but they even lost interest in this flick!
The performance overall was not bad, I thought that Anupam Kher stood out the most with his fine acting skills.
So if you have time why not try actually bending a ball like Beckham rather than watching this movie!
