Ben Hur - An eternal Classic. Review on Ben Hur Movie

I have heard a lot about this movie, and I chanced upon it on Prime Video. Having watched it, I thought I will share my thoughts on the movie. Also, I was not aware of the 2016, readaptation or reinterpretation of the movie. I think, the original 1959 version of the Lew Wallace's work, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, stands the test of time. The movie is replete with dramatic scenes and relies heavily on effect through amazing photography especially the close-up shots. Of course, anyone familiar with this movie, will talk about the Chariot race. This takes place towards the end of the movie and which kicks up a lot of dust and violence. We get the feel of what the Romans loved, and their lust for power. The bloodcurdling screams tears across to the audience as the race progresses. The protagonist is Judah Ben-Hur, who is a wealthy Jewish prince, played very convincingly by Charlton Heston and his friend Messala, a Roman, (played by Stephen Boyd) who, as events unfold turns his foe. The race is basically between these two rivals. As the events unfold, Judah and Messala find each other at opposing ends, baying for each others blood. Judah's actions sends him and his family into slavery. A parallel story but an essential ingredient in this movie is the story and ultimate glory of Christ and the Crucifiction. An inspirational encounter with Jesus changes everything, as the sufferings of Judah, come to an end and he is able to rescue his family from perdition. Another spectacle that this classic epic offers is the sea battle between the Romans and the Macedonians. The unusual shots of the galley slave rowers is breathtaking and very realistic. Although the story of Messala and Judah is fictional, its powerful progression leaves you wanting for more. The movie has been built on pure spectacle and compares favorably with similar classics of that era, like, Lawrence of Arabia. The movie may not however be without its faults.The duration of the movie, which is over three hours, can test the patience of the audience and the chariot race can prove to be bit of a drag. Also the female performances are almost insignificant and come across as being just add-ons. For instance, the roles played by Miriam(mother of Judah) and Tirzah, his sister. In the final analysis however, the movie is undoubtedly a masterpiece and a must watch, if you enjoy drama and period pieces.
