This review is in a response to the article posted in Time of India [21/08/08] website, where author is suggesting to scrap the olympics:
Surely written, by a couch potatoe, who thinks Ekta kapoor serials are the only thing the world wants and watches and cares.. No wonder 1+ billion people of India are not producing any noticeable results in any sports around the world let alone Olympics. The Author of th is article surely doesn't know anything about sporting competition [probably things here and there about cricket, may be that to from TV!]. In India do you know how many sports we play and in how many we are doing well? Very few.. and why, because the the thinking like this.
Even the political comments are not well thought of. About China, well, historically if you can see a country or people of a country gets new ideas or let's say revolutionary ideas come when they came in contact with people who are different than them, whether you believe it or not, the idea of one country called INDIA, came after British ruled us, before that there was no India, there were some 1500 individual kingdoms!! So, British in a way helped us unite as one nation.
So, by the way of Olympics held in China, the average chinese people got to see the people who are different from them and to interact with them to see what others are thinking and doing around the world. Considering the Chinese sensorship doesn't allow anything remotely anti chinese in Chinese people's thoughts, there is a strong possibilities that the people of china are cocooned in a shell and thinking that the world likes china and we are a great nation and doing everything right. But, interactions like this where the world gets a chance to influance the minds of Chinese people, we can see Olympics in China as our only chance to show the isolated Chinese people who can't leave china and see the world to show them how beautiful and free the world is and it's a nobel cause to fight for your rights, for democracy and the world is with them.
About Author's comment on players like Llayton Hewitt doesn't care about Olympics, the author clearly has no clue about the atheletes from Jamaica or Eithopia or other poor south african or South American or Asian countries who gives everything they have to be in the games and then win them. There are countries in the world about we don't know, we know about that countries when their players represent the countries in the events like Olympics and win. After the hardship they and their family and country faces in the form of femine, civil wars, poverty and hunger, may be things like Olympic and winning the Olympic medal means much more to them then you or arrogant player like Lleyton Hewitt [I stayed 2 years in Australia and yes, Australians too thinks he is arrogant, specially after he is not winning any major tournaments since last couple of years now].
About the doping controversies, well, there are people like African atheletes who wins the competitions by sheer will power and hard work, and there people who can't but they got a chance and they want to capitalise on it, manier times the athelete themselves doesn't know what they are taking as many times the coaching staff gives them the substances, and anyways few incidents of doping doesn't mean that the whole games are rigged, we know cricket matches can be fixed, should we stop watching cricket and stop arranging cricket games in the world??!
Olympics is the biggest celebration of humanity, We as a human race come togather to celebrate or differences, our similarities, our passions and share our ideas, belief and happiness. Olympics is the ultimate test for any atheletes who wants to make a mark in the world, to let the world know he has arrived and he is the best of the bests. It's an event where the richest of the rich and the poorest of the poor nations come togather and sit togather and exchange ideas, exchange awareness about each other, and that's how the world spreads the ideas, like freedom, love, unity in diversity, show and command respect from each other..
So, dismissing the Olympic is the last thing we want to do in this world which is already divided in so many fractions like religion, countries, caste, language, colour etc. Hope the author and the people who thinks in the similar lines can appreciate the celebration of human spirit fully.. Called Olympics and stop writing such nonsense articles.
