A few months back I had to shift to Bangalore because of my job. For 5 years before this I was in Pune. Most of my friends in Pune, my family and everyone was very happy that I had got the job in Bangalore. After all it is the ''IT City''. So I was happy too. I’ve stayed for 3 years in a hostel. So adjustment to dire straits and people comes easy. I’ve been to and have stayed at the major cities in India: Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad. So Bangalore was right there in line. But man was I wrong. First let me take the land prices. In Pune I used to share a 2 room flat with 3 friends and the total cost was 1000/- per head for the acco. A friend told said that I would get the whole flat in Bangalore for 2500-3000/-. What he forgot to mention was the fact that there is a deposit that is at least 10 times the rent amount. In Pune it was 8000/-. Here for a 1BHK it is at least 30,000/-. I have a friend here living in a 3 BHK and he has paid a deposit of 1.5 lakhs! Compare this to Hyderabad where in the poshest area: Banjara hills, another guy I know has taken a 2 BHK for 7000/- pm. Ok ! I started looking for a hostel and …I have a single room without an attached bath for which I’m forced to pay 2500/- in an area, which would rate as 3rd grade in pune. These kinds of rates are simply cheating. And I still haven’t told you of the amazing rates charged in the livable areas of Koramangala and Indiranagar.

Ok now let us take public transport. The bus service here is another tragedy. The same bus almost never turns up at the same time in the same place. On top of that the conductors don’t speak Hindi or English. I’ve faced situations where they know Hindi but would still reply in Kannada. While I’ve nothing against any language, I’ve everything against harassment in the name of language. Ever heard a metro shutting shops by 9 pm. Here it happens. Not only shops but also food joints shut down by 10 pm. There are a few exclusive restaurants, which stay open till 12 in MG road area, but only 2 that stay open till 1 am. How can a city have any night life with this sort of a regime. But Bangalore does have nightlife. That is if you like to drink. Then you will love its numerous pubs. But if you don’t, then stay at home boss. Wanna know about movies. There is supposedly a law here that says that only a certain number of English movies can be screened. So you have movies reaching here 1-2 months after Pune, Mumbai. That is if they come here. In Pune the high end multiplex: INOX , owned by the TATA group , where movie stars come and which has Mac Donalds and apparel outlets amongst other things charges a max of 120-130 bucks. That is also on the 1st week. Normal rates are around 80-100/-. Rest of the movie halls, which do not boast of such splendor charge 25-40/-. That’s it! In Bangalore completely inappropriate halls like Plaza charge 70/-. They have ac. You know what’s that: air-cooled!! Rex, which comes nowhere near Inox charges around 80-90/-. Help!! But Bangalore is not all bad. It has 4 good things. One of which is by god’s grace. They are: Weather, good roads, tree cover and less population density. But does it come near Pune, Mumbai: NO!!!
