Well,

so many people have criticized, praised and commented on the city to the hilt that some itmes I feel there is little I can add here.

Ofcourse, most of the criticism came from people who don't really live here and stay for a couple of days expecting to capture the soul of the city. For such sad losers I really can't help but pity.

Why don't you people realize that Bangalore is still a city in India? It has its problems but it has its good points also. It is among the most friendliest cities of India. You don't find slums the size of Dharavi In B'lore. You don't find people doing their morning nature calls like people on the B'bay rail tracks. You don't find that south Indians or North Indians are looked down upon as compared with the pseudo intellectuals of Delhi. And the lesser said about Calcutta the better. But then each of you living in these cities take the criticism as a personal assault failing to see the truth in these statements. You go into denial, into defensive.

Bangalore is not a city like Chandigarh which was planned to be a model city. It is a city like most others. It is growing, it is happening as compared to most other Indian cities where perhaps the government and the underworld seem to be at constant war.

Good points about Bangalore :

  1. People look beyond the pubs and discover a rich heritage of Carnatic art and music.

  2. Intellectual. Bangalore is among the top three cities of India when it comes to activities like Quizzing and other intellectual activities, the other two being Calcutta and Hyderabad.

  3. Young. It is a city of youngsters, no doubt about it. Again it is upto you whether you want to get drunk or involve in some useful activities

  4. Gateway to the South. You will find yourself more welcome here than compared to Chennai or Trivandrum. Trust me, been there done that.

  5. You dont have to know the local language to surivive in this city. Trust me on this one, I dont know Kannada and I have lived here for 20 odd years.

  6. Ofcourse, it is also a city that hosts most activities that were considered hep and happening in the US in the 70s and 80s..read rock shows.

  7. Beautiful women. :-)

  8. Good governance and involvements of private parties towards development. Ever heard of BATF? I see a lot of changes since the SMK govt took over.

  9. Relatively low crime rate

  10. The weather.

Bad points:

  1. Traffic is insane, but isnt that the case with all metros. Delhi being the worst.

  2. Too much stress on pub culture leading to B'lore being the alcoholic city of India from the pub capital.

  3. Too much migration of people from all parts of the country have made this city cosmopolitan but it hurts when these people keep talking off nothing but complaints. Grow up people. It is India after all.

  4. The city closes by midnight.

So, while it might be the most happening city in India, it is insane to expect 4 year old kids to speak English or Hindi. Do you really expect Hindi speaking public in Gujrat or Bengal? I didn't. Atleast in Bangalore, you will find people responding in Hindi for most queries. English is more spoken here than Hindi, its not their fault anyways (I am a Marathi and I know how things work in Pune).

Newsweek recently included it among the most happening cities in the world. Sure, so many people can't be wrong. Live here for about a month and then comment or ocmplain. And if you can't live here, it aint the city's loss. There are enough citizens who love it and are proud of it.
