This is the updated version
First of all, I would like to congratulate BSNL (hope they see this) on launching DataOne. Though they took quite some time to implement that.
I had applied for the service in January after it’s launce through their website. But I got the modem installed on 5th April. There was a lot of stuff that went between the telephone dept and me and finally I made sure that the connection was working on 8th April. BTW I got the Home 500 Plan with rented modem.
Any way, once I got the connection I tried to test it’s speed. It was pretty fast (I was using dial-up before with 40kbps max) and luckily I paid the amount on 28th March so I can use the connection till 30th June without download limit!!
SPEED: The speed is amazing (compared to dial-up or average cyber-cafes). I generally get a download speed of 25KBps (its KBps not kbps),
CONNECTIVITY: Connecting to the network takes some time when connecting for the first time. But once connected, it stays until you disconnect manually. I don’t know if all will agree on this but for me I never had any automatic disconnection.
USAGE: The 1GB limit is normally sufficient for home usage (surfing, chatting, mailing, …) but I would not recommend it for a serious user (downloading stuff) who would generally cross the limit in a couple of weeks. And 2 Rs for an MB is pretty much costly.
All the required technical specifications are mentioned in the site https://bsnl.co.in/service/dataone.htm.
UPDATES
An ADSL modem is required to use this connection. I am not very sure but I think you can buy ur own modem but then I dont think BSNL will provide any support. It is better to take their modem as they will be responsible for the modem.
There are 2 options for the connection,
Buy Modem (Rs. 2000) from BSNL.
Rented Modem from BSNL. For this you have to pay a non-refundable Rs.500 and monthly rental of Rs. 100.
You can opt for installation which is charged at Rs 500.
For the 1st option with Installation for Home500 plan
Initial Payment: Around Rs. 3400.
Installation 500
Advance Rent 500
Modem 2000
Service Charges 400
Monthly Rent : Rs. 500 (+ Rs. 2 per MB if 1GB limit is crossed)
For the 2nd option with installation for same plan
Initial Payment: Around Rs. 1800.
Installation 500
Advance Rent 500
Modem 500 (Non-refundable)
Service Charges 300
Monthly Rent : Rs. 600 (+ Rs. 2 per MB if 1GB limit is crossed)
500 for plan and 100 for modem.
Monthly Rent : Rs. 500 (+ Rs. 2 per MB if 1GB limit is crossed)
The only thing that can change in payment is the monthly rental.
You can have the modem for free if u take Home 1800 plan for 12 months or Home 3300 plan for 6 months.

I hope this review helps in clearing most of the doubts for people who wish to take the connections. Please comment.
If you have a BSNL phone just go for DataOne. Happy surfing, chatting, mailing....
I need some clarifications regarding the usage.
How can we keep track of the usage? Any tools?
Someone mentioned about free email. How can we get that?
I tried to connect from Linux, but noluck. Has anyone tried to connect in Linux?
I would appreciate if someone clarify my doubts.
Also please rate my review and provide some feedback.
Thank You,
SashiKanth
