Parle Appy Fizz is a fruit beverage which has been one of Parle Agro’s best-selling beverages

We would like to caution those who drink Parle Appy Fizz thinking it is fruit juice. It is a sugary beverage with 1.9% Apple juice concentrate in it.

In India, it is a common sight for people to drink large quantities of sugary beverages regularly without looking at the ingredient label. This product contains 21 gm of sugar in just 160 ml which is a very high quantity. This amount of sugar is not safe for people with diabetes and obesity.

Parle Appy fizz contains high a high amount of sugar 21 gm in just 160 ml of the drink which is harmful for the diabetics and those with lifestyle diseases. This drink should be consumed only in small quantities, if at all, even by healthy people because of the high sugar content.

This food product does not specify which flavours or flavouring substances have been used. The flavours should be specified as some of them have serious side effects and may not be suitable for infants, pregnant women or people who are allergic. We believe that it is not responsible behaviour for a brand to avoid clearly stating what ingredients have been used.

By not specifying what these flavours and substances are, we are forced to consider what they are hiding and why would they be so reluctant to mention what they have used in the food product!

Sugar

This food product contains 21 gm sugar per 160 ml of the drink. It does not specify which sugar has been used. This is important because different sugars have different metabolic effects. For example, Sucrose(Cane Sugar) is very different from Fructose(Fruit Sugar). Some foods use high fructose corn syrup which may be harmful in much lower quantities than sucrose. We believe that it is not responsible behaviour for a brand to not clearly state what ingredients have been used.

Malic Acid IN 296

Malic acid is a natural acid present in most fruits and many vegetables. Commercially made by chemical synthesis. It is part of the metabolic pathway of every living cell.

Used as acid, flavour compound and colour stabilizer in apple- and grapejuice. No side effects known. High concentrations are not permitted in infant food, as small children lack the capacity to metabolise large amounts of malic acid.

Preservative Benzoic acid IN 211

Benzoic acid, benzoates and benzoic acid esters are commonly found in most fruits, especially berries. Cranberries are a very rich source of benzoic acid. In addition to fruits, benzoates occur naturally in mushrooms, cinnamon, cloves and some dairy products(as a result of bacterial fermentation). For commercial purposes, it is prepared chemically from toluene.

Benzoic acid and benzoates are used as preservatives against both yeasts and bacteria in acidic products. They are not very effective against fungi, and ineffective in products with a pH above 5(slightly acidic or neutral). High concentrations have an acid taste, which limits the application. Benzoates are often preferred, due to better solubility. Benzoic acid and benzoates are used in a wide range of acid or slightly acidic products.

No side effects in the concentrations used. In some people benzoic acid and benzoates may liberate histamine and thus cause pseudo-allergic reactions.

IN 224

Potassium salt of sulphurous acid. It is a white, non-stable powder, which reacts with oxygen to form potassium sulphate. In acidic conditions it forms sulphurous acid, which acts as a preservative. It is used as a preservative in fruits and fruit products and may be used as a bleaching agent. Found in Preserved onions, wine, preserved fruits, shellfish, etc. Due to its oxidising effect, it may reduce the vitamin content in products. It is reduced in the liver to harmless sulphate and excreted in the urine.

People who are intolerant towards natural sulphites should also avoid added sulphites(E221-228). It alleviates the effect of a hangover.

Sulfite Ammonia caramel IN 150 D

Complex brown colour mixtures, made by dry heating and burning of sugars in the presence of alkali, ammonia, sulphite or combinations thereof. Caramel color is one of the oldest and most widely used food colorings, and is found in many commercially produced foods and beverages. Caramel color is widely approved for use in food globally but application and use level restrictions vary by country. Brown to black colours. Soluble in water and with a specific, sometimes bitter, taste.
