May be now is the trend of Split Personality & Multiple Personality disorders in Tamil Cinema…… yes, the recent Tamil Films ‘Chandramukhi’ (Split Personality) and ‘Anniyan’ (Multiple Personality disorders) turned out to be grand successes with this concept! Gossips say that the upcoming ‘Vallavan’ is also based on a similar concept!

‘ANNIYAN’

‘Anniyan’ although has shaped different feelings & opinions, which could easily be seen from the 41 reviews already in MS on this film, in my honest outlook Shankar has succeeded in magnetizing the spectators with his very fast-moving screen-play & properly directing Vikram so that all his hidden talents have been completely brought out in the film. Although ‘Anniyan’ is believed to be more dominantly resembling Shankar’s own ‘Indian’ and a bit of Chandramukhi and a little of Ramana, ‘Anniyan’ is surely worth a watch !

THE ‘ANNIYAN’ TEAM

Sujatha / Dialogues

= = = = = = = = = =

In every Film, dialogues play the fundamental role! Here Sujatha Renganathan hasn’t disappointed us with his characteristically most charming dialogues which have contributed a great deal to the majesticity of this movie.

The loath (Charlie), who accidentally spits on our hero Ramanujam Alias Ambi (Vikram) and when Ambi requests Charlie to at least apologize to him for the unlawful blooper, he very casually utters “Sorry Poori Kakoos Kaari…”, which sure is accurately phrased.

The Climax where Vikram utters uninterrupted dialogues in-and-out of being ‘Ambi’ and ‘Anniyan’ and the scene where the Psychiatrist scrutinizes Vikram, his talk constantly shifting from Ambi to Anniyan to Remo are where Sujatha stands ! Hats Off to you Sujatha….. you’ve persistently been proving yourself !

Manikandan & Ravi Varman / Cinematography

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Manikandan and Ravi Varman have no doubt rendered their best efforts for the successful cinematography. The classic super-dooper hit “Kumaari Kumaari…..” shot in the Tulip fields of Amsterdam wow….. is breath-taking ! The “Kannum Kannum Nokia” ha ha ha ha is just stunningly shot at the KL Airport ! The Photography in general greatly adds to the charm of the movie and obviously reveals the Rs. 25 crores budget of the film.

Peter Haynes / Action

= = = = = = = = = = =

The stunning action scenes are the great +ses of the film – action added with the special effects make many fighting scenes astounding. “Andankaakaa…….” is yet another illustration of the spectacular-ness of Peter Haynes !

Harris Jeyaraj / Music

= = = = = = = = = = =

Music plays a very vital role in every successful Film. The ‘Minnale’, ‘Ullam Ketkudhey’, ‘Lesa Lesa’ & ‘Kaaka Kaaka’ King Harris Jeyaraj has a greater impact in ‘Anniyan’ too. The clarity in the music reveals the Cool, Calm & Transparent Harris to us ! Strictly following his theory “Lesser the number of films, best the outcome is”, he has once again proven himself at ‘Anniyan’.

“Kumaari Kumaari…….”, “Kadhal Yaanai…..” and “Kannum Kannum Nokia…” unquestionably makes the audience to murmur the music even after they are out of the theatre !

Shankar / Direction

= = = = = = = = = =

Last but never the least – the successful film-maker after his Exceptional Hits like ‘Gentleman’, ‘Jeans’, ‘Indian’, ‘Mudhalvan’…… and the latest highly controversial ‘Boys’, has for sure succeeded much more in ‘Anniyan’.

Meaning of ‘Shankar’ in the Gollywood Dictionary – ‘Grand Budget’. Though Anniyan was conceived with an initial estimate of Rs. 20 crores, news releases confirm the expenditure of around Rs.29 Crores spent for ‘Anniyan’.

The Great Director Shankar’s repetitive concepts of Hero’s cold-blooded reactions against illegality / unlawful acts which has already appeared in ‘Indian’ and the web-based killing already shown in ‘Ramanaa’ are quite disappointing, Shankar has managed to turnout ‘Anniyan’ a grand success with the Enormous Pillar called ‘Vikram’.

CHARACTERIZATIONS :

= = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Vikram (Ambi / Anniyan / Remo)

Vikram (suffering from Multiple Personality Disorder) as the ‘innocent Ambi’, brutal ‘Anniyan’ and brave & romantic ‘Remo’ is no doubt a massive pillar for this movie. As an innocent Ramanujam Alias Ambi, Vikram has acted Err.. lived as a South-Indian Brahmin Lawyer. The scenes where Ambi is aggravated by the spitting of a cycle-man, the motorists violating the traffic rules, merciless people not offering a lift to the injured party due to which the victim dies, Vikram has lived as ‘Ambi’… Equally worth-an-appreciation is the other character of Vikram namely ‘Remo’, who is brave and romantic and falls in love with Nandhini (Sada). … I think to express my words of appreciation of Vikram in this movie, that would require a separate review..!

Nandhini (Sada)

In general Tamil movies use heroines more for glamour and as an unwritten rule but for a few established heroines like Simran, Jyotika, Ramya Krishnan & Sneha, most heroines are just a show-piece… Here Sada falls under the same rule but for quite a few scenes where she shows expressions of great shock when Vikram tries to kill her, when she coordinates with the Psychiatrist who treats Vikram etc…

Chari (Vivek)

The moment the Cop Prakash Raj utters ‘Chari’, Vivek instantly makes us laugh by saying ‘Sorry’ almost all the way through the movie. Unlike the customary comedians who simply bring a smile for the time-being, Vivek’s comedies are always written with great care that apart from ultimately conveying a message, they are mostly scripted as per the day-to-day news / trend. Vivek is the next massive pillar for ‘Anniyan’ !

Cop (Prakash Raj)

As always, Prakash Raj has rendered a very natural acting and has deeply involved himself with his character. At the murder spots, he has acted really well having disguised like a cowboy and like a workman carrying corpse etc. etc. etc…… and at scenes when he tries out all the permutations and combinations for the words written by the murderer at the murder spots… and when he tries to find out the meaning of Sanskrit words in order to trace the murderer etc……. Prakash Raj is the best choice !
