Aishwarya Rai. Miss World 1994, a Bollywood queen, an international actress and dream girl of many. I am not going to write her full biographical detail, as there are many websites out there full of her information.

Aishwarya first became a famous name when she did a Pepsi commercial with Amir Khan. She appeared a beautiful, hot, young, delicate and innocent girl then. Next one was Miss India competition. A famous tie in final round with Sushmita Sen and she lost to Sush. Still, she had an opportunity to shine at Miss World pageant in 1994. Sure enough she did shine and made all Indians proud by winning two most prestigious title - Miss Photogenic and of course, Miss World.

The Miss World's that you've had up to date are proof enough, that they had compassion, compassion for the underprivileged...Not only for those who had status and stature, but who can look beyond barriers that man has set up for ourselves of nationality (crowd again goes crazy with enthusiasm), color, we have to look beyond that, and that will make a true Miss World, a true person, a real person.

She spent the following year as Miss World's ambassador and then returned to Sun City to hand over her crown to Jacqueline Aguilera of Venezuela. The journey into Film Industry began.

Her first movie was Iruvar, which received bad reviews all over. The movie bombed at the box office. Her acting skills were criticized all over. Then came Jeans and Aur Pyar Ho Gaya (1996). In fact, Aur Pyar Ho Gaya was her first major break in Bollywood. Unfortunately, the movie flopped too. However, improvement in her acting was noted everywhere.

After a few years, she returned with Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999). The movie did average business and her acting was appreciated. But her first remarkable success came in the same year with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's acclaimed super hit Hum Dil De Chucke Sanam (HDDCS). She received rave reviews for her acting. She swept awards that year by winning all three major awards: Filmfare, Screen and Zee Cine Awards for the movie. The year did not end there for Aish. Taal, a Subhash Ghai venture, also released same year. Her acting received big applauses again. All in all, 1999 established Aishwrya as an actress to recon with.

2000 was again a busy year for her. Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, Mohabbatein, Dhai Skshar Prem Ke and Josh released this year. All movies but Mohabbatein failed to garner enough audiences at the box office. She had a small roll in Mohabbatein; but boy oh boy, she looks stunning in the movie. She also did a Tamil Movie – “Kandukondain Kandukondain”. I am not sure if the movie was a hit or flop. She was a judge in Miss World 1996 and Miss India 1999.

Year 2001 saw Aish in a movie with Govinda – Albela, which failed at the BO. She returned with a bang in 2002 with critically acclaimed roll of Parvati (Paro) in Devdas (superhit) and Hum Kisise Kam Nahin (Hit). She won the Filmfare award for Devdas that year.

Aishwarya’s first home production, Dil Ka Risha, co-starred Arjun Rampal was released in 2003. The movie did not work at the BO but her acting received raves again. Kucch Na Kaho, released same year, also failed to make magic at the BO.

This year so far Aish has been seen in two movies, Khakee and Kyun Ho Gaya Na! She successfully experimented in Khakee with a negative roll as the movie proved a moneymaker for the investors. KHGN, despite the famous ‘smooch’, failed J.

Now that was all the info about Ms. Gorgeous. Here is what I think! She is arguably the most beautiful woman in the world, if one were to go by physical beauty. She is extremely fair with spotless skin, beautiful eyes, silky hair, perfect figure, graceful walk and adorable voice. She still exudes the same beauty and awe that she used to in early 90s. To maintain such a personality for more than a decade is no less than an achievement in itself. She is one of the top models of the world.

As for acting, if you follow her career closely, you will notice that her acting has received many accolades when she has worked for a talented director. HDDCS and Devdas with Bhansali, Taal with Subhash Ghai, Khakee with Rajkumar Santoshi and Chokar Bali with Rituparno Ghose are testament to this. In essence, she is a director’s actor – which is the case for most actors anyway. As for her acting in initial movies, one can give her benefit of doubt considering she was an amateur and new to the acting career. She has improved considerably over the years and she must be given credit for that.

I know there are many here who don’t like Aishwarya, but I am sure many here do like her. I am one of the latter ones. She is a contributing factor to Indian Film Industry’s international recognition today. Keep it up Aish, your fans are with you.
