Hmm.5 best books. When I first saw this subject, I knew I wanted to write a review on it. But I didn't know what 5 books to choose.there are so many great books in the world.

Should I choose adventure, thriller, romance? But then I realised that the best books are those which let your imagination run away with you, those that leave some of the story-telling to the reader and not just the author.

That is a sign of the greatest books written. So my fellow mouthshutians, hope you like my choice based on that sign!

Countdown starting from number 5!

FIVE:

Great Expectations:

Thats right, no.5 is the classic novel by Charles Dickens: Great Expectations. Before I started reading this book, I felt that it would be a very difficult read, judging by the fact that it was written in the 19th century!

Admittedly, I was expecting it to be a very droll book, but still I decided to give it a try. And guess what I discovered? I was wrong! Once you get past the first page, you are lost in the world of Pip, the protagonist in this story.

From the age of 7 to his mid-thirties, Dickens explores how the exciting events in Pip's life shaped what he is now. Along the way, he meets new aquaintances and friends who help to influence the decisions he makes. The main moral of this story is that nobody can change what they are inside, no matter how many influences are present, which Pip does not realise at first in this novel when he meets Estella and Miss Havisham.

I am not going to give the plot away because I want everyone to admire the beauty of Dickens' original piece and not the blueprint of the story in my review. But seriously this book is worth reading because not only is it a wonderful, imaginative book but it is a story that the reader can relate to because everybody experiences at least one of the battles that Pip faces in his journey of life.

FOUR:

Anne of Green Gables:

Yes it was the red-haired Anne Shirley who stole vote number 4. Made by Lucy Montgomery, although this is technically classed as a child/young adult book, I still get pleasure reading it after the 1000th time. This is because this book has the rare quality of true love.

It is love which Anne desires when she is just an orphan, it is love which draws her guardians to devote their lives to her, it is platonic love which keeps the ever-growing friendship between her and her oldest friends from childhood to adulthood.

This story explores love in all of its different forms and that is what makes us love it. The book that tells the story of Anne Shirley, an orphan who is fostered by Matthew and Marilla, two ageing, lonely siblings. Exasperating and exhausting as she may be, Anne soon manages to find a place in their hearts and every other person she meets because she is a'kindred spirit'.

The rest of the books in the series are excellent too, such as Anne of Ingleside, Anne of Avonlea and Anne's Dream House which are for older readers but this story, being the first captivates our imagination more than the others and puts us in the world of Avonlea.

THREE:

Noughts and Crosses:

This book truly grabs our emotions and takes them on a journey of friendship, love, anger, hate, devotion and every other feeling you can think of but unlike other books, never loses our attention.

Malorie Blackman takes us to a world where everything is upside down, where white people are second-class citizens and black people the most powerful on the planet. This is an indirect reflection of when the world was racist and people were treated according to their race. However, Noughts and Crosses tells the story of two true friends: Sephy and Callum.

Sephy: the daughter of one of the most powerful men in the planet, she is a Cross. Callum: second class citizen, living in the suburbs, he is a Nought. The story is based around how their friendship gradually changes to love, and there is conflict between their love and the views of the rest of the world. A great book everyone, you have to read it!

TWO:

Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix:

Yes, you knew it was coming, it is a Harry Potter book. When the first came out, I laughed to myself and thought, 'what an amateur idea, witches and wizards has soo already been done!' But yet again I was wrong. Witches and wizards had already been done but not in the way that Joanne Rowling introduced.

Harry Potter thinks he is an ordinary boy until he discovers that he is one of the most famous wizards in the world, and his parents have been killed by a powerful Dark Wizard: Lord Voldemort, who has disappeared and is believed dead! Sounds exciting right? The series has generally progressed on to the fifth book: the Order of Phoenix.

I think this is the best one of all five because it experiments with our feelings and actually properly brings out the fact that magic could exist and witches and wizards are just like normal human beings, with the exception of magical powers of course! In this book, Lord Voldemort has returned and only a few wizards believe Harry and his headteacher when they try to convey this idea.

Harry experiences life's normal problems such as relationships, exams but on top of that he has to bear people calling him crazy and fight with powerful dark wizards. Even though the story is so far from real life, Rowling draws us into it by adding a touch of reality which is a rare value in books.

AND ITS NUMBER ONNNEEEEEEEE

A Time to Kill:

It is the famous John Grisham book. A ten year old girl is raped by two men, then her father murders them and goes to court himself. The originality yet reality of this story is what makes it number 1.

The pains experienced by the father at the destruction of his daughter's innocence, the satisfaction he obtains from punishing her aggressors make us side with him during the whole court case. He has done right by doing a wrong but our sympathies still lie with him.

The way Grisham makes us sympathise, anger, want to punish the characters as if they were real people is absolutely fantastic, an award winning quality. And the true beauty of this story is that the events in it could actually happen, have happened which captures our emotions even more. I can't give away anymore of this book because it will spoil it for you when you read it. It is one of the greatest books ever written and I hope everyone shares my views.

In my review, I haven't given too much of the plots away because it will just spoil it for you to know the stories of these wonderful books without having read them. But I will emphasise that if you want to read a book, read one of the above and you will agree they take you to a whole new world, where it is just you, the author and the characters.

The moral of my review? First read, then judge because you could realise you made a mistake by judging a book by its cover like I did.

Please send your comments in.they will be greeted with a smile!

Have a great day every1! And Smile:-)
