’’Guess who’s back, back again , gamer is back , back again.’’

Driving, adventure and a heavy does of violence and gore come together, perfectly balanced for your hidden,
menacing side in this game by Rockstar Productions. With its unique perspective, Grand Theft Auto III (GTA III) puts you right in the middle of harm’s way while you peddle drugs and kidnap your way to mo’ money. The blatantly offensive title has taken a huge step by offering a fully 3D street experience to become one of the best action games yet to arrive for the PC platform. Another first time highlight in this “three-quel” is a fast paced story line with twists and turns you would expect from a Pacino flick.

Story

Well there is nothing here like you have to save a world from aliens who have come into earth through a portal to hell, or saving a country in a war, or fighting terrorists who have a deadly virus or a nuke with them. You are just here to save yourself and make a better life for yourself. You are with a friend named 8 Ball and you escape from a prison van and from there you start your criminal career. All this action takes place in the Liberty City. Liberty City is divided into three islands, which are unlocked by completing missions. You’ll begin in Portland, the industrial sector. After doing work for several employers here, the Callahan Bridge, which was destroyed during your will be repaired so you can cross over to Staunton Island. After working for more new employers here, the Shoreside Lift Bridge will be fixed, giving you access to the final island, Shoreside Vale. As I said you have to work your way up the ladder and make a name for yourself.

Gameplay

Oh My God! Where do I start? There are so many things that you can do in this game. Okay let me give it a try. As the name of the game suggests, the game involves a lot of stealing of cars to finish the jobs or missions you are assigned to. The jobs range from getting a streetwalker to a mafia boss or getting a bomb attached to a car or stealing a pay roll van or even killing off some rival mob members. You will be working for various groups like the Salvatore, Yakuza and the likes. You get money for finishing these jobs and this money can be used to buy new weapons. And of course you have the police after you while you are giving the world your dose of anarchy. This is not all! Then you have something called as Taxi missions where you have to take people to their destinations and you get cash for that. Then you have the ambulance missions where you have to transport the injured to the hospital. You then have the fire missions where you have to put out the fires and you also have the vigilante missions where you have to catch the bad guys for a change. Overall there are around 72 missions. Then in somewhere in the streets you can also perform stunts. For example, in one place you have to jump over a row of trailers and then somewhere you have to jump over the ocean, of course in a car. Also if you are “bad” enough during the game, the police will stop chasing you and the FBI will take over! And if you are really wicked, the National Guards will come into the picture with tanks and all. Consider suicide. There are a load of other things which if I start to write will take an eternity. So I guess I will stop here.

Graphics

Woohoo! That is what I have to say about the graphics of the game. The 3D environment in the game is real cool and it is the small details that make the difference in this game. You have papers and leaves flying and then you have the hoarding for the different shops. The graphics when it rains are very much detailed and you can see an individual rain drop too! The face models of the characters are excellent and very real. A mafia guy looks like a mafia guy and a drug pusher looks like a drug pusher, hope you catch my drift. The cars too are excellently modeled and you can differentiate each car by the looks itself. There are so many cars in the game and by the time you have played even 20 missions you will be able to recognize a kuruma from a banshee and a rumpo from a moonbeam. Believe me! Also the in-engine movies which brief you about the mission are pretty good to look at.

Sound

Awesome to say the least. You have the very innovative radio FM in the game. When you get into a car, you have a choice of few radio channels to listen and they offer a range of music for your ears ranging from country to techno to hip-hop and the funny chatter-box where as the name says, there is a lot of talking going on. And if you don’t want to listen to these radio channels you can just copy your favorite songs to the MP3 folder and listen to them while your playing using the in-built MP3 player. Cool, Right? Then going on the actual speech by the characters in the game. The voice acting is perfect here. The voice of the characters is crisp and clear and they talk the way they should. The best example here is the Mafia group where the characters sound straight out of Al Pacino Mafia flick. You will love listening to these small dialogues wherein you are briefed about your mission. The following is one of my favorite. One of the mafia boss Luigi tells this.
“There’s a new high on the street which goes by the name of Spank. Some guy down at the shore has been introducing this stuff to my girls. Go and introduce a bat to his face. Then pick his car, respray it and bring it to me. I want compensation for this insult”.

Weapons

Well you don’t have any fancy weaponry like a rail gun or a plasma gun or the holy and almighty *heads bow in reverence* BFG10K. Heh heh. The weapons here range from the usual pistol to the Uzi, shotgun, machine guns, sniper rifle, rocket launcher, flame thrower, Molotov cocktail and the grenades. Nothing very impressive but these are the perfect weapons for this game. But I guess they could have improved a bit on the weapons controls. Otherwise a pretty much decent effort but a poor effort if you compare it to the other aspects of this game. One more thing I would like to mention is that you can still fire your Uzi when you are riding in car a la bank robbery flicks.

Other things

Well you have a section called Stats in the menu of the game which you can access during the game. It gives your criminal rating which starts from bully and goes all the way upto Boss. It also gives you other information like total cars destroyed or people wasted or maximum insane jump height and length. My insane jump height is 32 feet and length is 212 feet. Others who have played this game, please share your insane jump statistics with me. Then you can also pick up streetwalkers on the road. You just go stop a car near them. They enter your car and for each second , a dollar is reduced from your balance. Take the car outside the road and stop the car and the car starts shaking! Your health also increases in the process. There are loads of other things which you can check out by buying this game.

My Take.

This is definitely one of the best games ever made for the PC and also one of the most addictive games made. I just cant wait for GTA III - Vice City for the PC to release. But please don’t let the kids play this game as it has been rated as “M” and the original version of this game was banned in Australia. This game has everything an avid gamer would like, i.e., violence, guns, cars, slapstick humour and the likes. With GTA III, you don’t have to worry about wetting your pants after getting busted for a hit. So go ahead and get ready for the ride of your life.
