Update: After 5.75 years and around 32,000 Kms the range of my e2o is now only 67 Kms :-(. Got my e2o from service yesterday. For sometime I was facing an issue of car going into L mode when the charge is less than 20%. The car Barely moves in this position. The battery was checked and reca...librated during service and the new range is 67 Kms for 100% charge.Read More

Below are some updates after a year of use and clocking 7 K Kms. I continue to find the car very good. The first service was free except for the pickup drop charges and replacement of a wheel cap which was stolen. The charge point issues I had at my apartment are solved, and I charge my car at... a common charging point in my apartment. Thanks to the association members for accommodating this. I did a couple more of 'Long' trips. One was round trip of 80 Kms to Tumkur road via NICE road. The ride was good with 20 Kms charge remaining at the end. However there was a heavy downpour on the return trip and the car felt a little shaken by crosswinds. The other was a Trip to the airport and back after 2 days. The airport is 48 Kms. from home and I used the charge point at the airport. The car is bumpier on rough roads and speed breakers compared to a bigger car. However it is very smooth and quiet on plain roads and highways. When starting the car from parking it is very important to release the parking brake only when you are ready to move in F or R gear and have your foot on the brake. I have the habit of releasing the parking brake as soon as I get in which can lead to rear ending a vehicle in front on a slope. This has happened to me and I have also seen it happen during Valet parking which is why it better to instruct Valet Parking drivers. As I have mentioned a P mode in the auto gear positions to lock the wheels would make things easier. The addition of Power Steering in the T2 models is very welcome. Also the new models have a range of 120 Kms compared to the present 100 Kms. Surprisingly the other specs like the battery and power remain the same. I was told that there is an option to upgrade the old T2 models with both power steering and increased range. If I am given the option to upgrade I will post an update regarding these two changes.Read More

A 4 door 5 seater electric hatchback or sedan with a range of 250+ Kms and a top speed of 120 K/h that can cruise the entire NICE road stretch at a speed of 100. I do not think the planned electric Verito can come anywhere close to this but a trade off of range and speed for the size of the car woul...d be good considering that E2O is already a near perfect 1-2 person commute car. Quick Chargers that can enable E2O to go weekend getaways like Mysore or Nandi Hills. With quick chargers it also might be possible to run an electric taxi service when Electric Verito is launched. Electric vehicles for Safaris would be a good choice. Being noiseless the chances of sighting animals would be better compared to diesel vehicles.Read More

However electricity generation will become cleaner over the years with more focus on Nuclear, Solar and Wind energy. Another benefit of EVs is that they can help in reducing oil imports. Even considering the CO2 generated for producing the electricity required for charging the car the CO2 emis...sions from E2O are slightly less compared to a petrol or diesel vehicle. In the link below Pawan Goenka, chairman, Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles says that CO2 emissions are at least 30% less: http://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/mahindra-mahindra-s-green-gamble-113040100644_1.html Below is my own calculation regarding the same: Petrol produces 2.34 Kg CO2/L. Considering that a car like Nano on an average gives 18 Kms/L in the city CO2 generated by Nano = 2.34/18 = 0.13 Kg / Km In India 0.87 Kg of CO2 is produced per unit of electricity. E2O takes 10 units of electricity which gives 90 Kms. I am considering 90% efficiency which is easier to achieve than getting 55 from my Victor or 16 from my Ford Ikon TDCI in the city. CO2 generated by E2O = 10 * 0.87 / 90 = 0.1 Kg / Km which is lesser than a Nano Below are the sources of info regarding CO2 production by petrol and electricity generation: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070716225125AAHzgmg http://www.greenpeace.org/india/Global/india/report/2007/11/hiding-behind-the-poor-presentation.pdf Wish List Being a developing technology the wish list from EVs can be very long. In US Tesla is a very promising high end electric car around which there is a lot of buzz. Below are a few things which I would like in the next 5 to 10 years in India: A 150+ Kms. E2O battery at a price within 1.5 L whenever my battery is due for change which I hope is not in the near future. A Lithium Ion battery powered scooter with 80 Kms range and 80 Kms top speed at a price around 1 L.Read More

In apartments especially larger ones getting a charging point for your Reva can be a problem. If you have an open parking space then you are probably too far from your electricity meter. Even if you have a basement car parking close to your meter you need to do your wiring through the common area wh...ich the apartment association can choose to deny access to for their own reasons. The latter was the issue in my case. The association refused access to the common area to do wiring from my meter to my parking lot. Their reasoning was that since there are many open parking lots who cannot do the same no one should be allowed to do it. Providing common metered charging points was also was rejected because there are only 4 Reva owners and the facility cannot be provided just for 4 people because it would require monitoring and billing. I have made the request again to the newly elected management and am hopeful of getting atleast a common charging point in my apartment before my car completes a year. Apartments in general should be more accommodative of EVs and there should be general guidelines or atleast an acceptance on what can be done within the infrastructure of an apartment to accommodate EVs. For instance there is nothing wrong in allowing charging points from personal meter to the basement car park within a reasonable distance as long as common charging points are provided in case someone with an open car parking wants to own a Reva. It is better than not allowing any charging facility at all which effectively prevents people from owning an EV. I am currently charging my car at my office. Carbon Footprint One argument that can come against Reva being environment friendly is that the carbon footprint (CO2 emissions) for generating electricity is high in India since a lot of it comes from coal. So the pollution is merely transferred elsewhere.Read More

Starting problem seems to be a TVS legacy. My 2003 Victor used to give a lot of starting trouble when it was new. It was Ok after I moved away from TVS authorized service center to a local mechanic for fixing this problem and regular servicing. It has now done 28 K Kms and mileage I get is 62 K/l wi...th very careful riding and around 47-48 on using the accelerator freely.Read More

I chose a ford Ikon as I went in for a common-rail diesel which is well powered. The price difference between petrol and diesel should be made up in around 35 k Kms. I used to have an Indica petrol and am a bit cynical about petrol car's mileage which always ends up in 9-10 range in city except f...or those from Maruti and the smaller hatchbacks. The Indigo CS diesel DICOR does not have a good reputation and the TDI is an older technology diesel. Regarding Indigo the front seats are more comfortable especially if you are over 170 cms (5'8).Read More

I feel that your mileage rating is a little high for petrol Indigo. I have an indica petrol and I get about 9 K/l in City and 15 in highway without AC. The XL enginge being higher powered at 100 bhp compared to 75 bhp must return even lesser mileage.

I purchased VX922, the 19 inch LCD monitor from ViewSonic and am happy with it. It has a 2ms response time which is better than Samsung and looks quite sleek. I have a 19 inch SyncMaster 920N at work and I would say the display quality is close to the Samsung one. I would recommend ViewSonic LCD...Read more
