Nice point raised!! Hope the service guys can satisfy your concerns. I am a subscriber to TataSky and have an early review here as well. To be fair, , they activate the signal only when the installation jock calls the help centre. This guy needs his 1000 bucks so he has no incentive to tell the cent...re abt the subs aggt. He just asks them to activate. Again I don't have all the facts. But from an earlier exp with Hathway, I seem to recall that the settop there too was the property of the cable guy. I mean you pay in installments, etc but until 3 years are over, the guy refuses to allow you to pay the balance. Atleast that was the experience when my sis relocated. given that the remote is closely clued into the box, I suspect the settop is useless, with some other service. Could someone with Dish TV & TSky confirm if you can swap the cards. I suspect not. About the cabling, I don't quite get what the issue with hooking up to subs cabling is (except that's something more for the jock to troubleshoot). But in my case the guy claimed that since the cable in our aptmt may be the property of the cable operator, he cannot risk damaging or splicing that. Turns out he was right, as a neighbour who had DishTV installed into his wiring was harrassed by cableguy who claimed the cable thru' the building ducts was also his.Read More

OK, Two quick comments about service levels @ TataSky. During a recent shower here in Bangy, the box went off for a few mins (the start of a rain seems to bring down the box for 5 mins - 1st comment), but when it came on we had a blackout and by the time the DG came on, the TSky box had got stuck on... the guide. All channels & settings (Favorites, reminders) were wiped out. Called the Support desk ASAP @ 10PM, and the nice lady there tried to take us thru' the 'take out the Subscrb card & wipe it on a clean towel' routine, but nothing happened. She said something about a downtime in Delhi due to rain (boy!! that was a new one), but said I could call back in 30mins if it did not recover. Anyway we called and registered a complaint, (they give u a complaint no and such), but the lady would only commit to a callback in 48 hours. Surprise, surprise when the rain subsided, there was another little power off, and the system restarted - Looks like u need to get the box off standby (powered down for a few mins). I did not followup with TSky, but was pleasantly surprised to get a call explaining the same procedure, and offering to visit that Afternoon (basically just half a day). Overall it would have helped if 1st level support was sharper, but the techies get back quickly, which is heartening. could be the honeymoon phase, but the installation certainly was a less than stellar experience, so hope they've learnt quickly. BTW, the games u see in the advts are now online. kinda cute timepass, esp the Hangman & Tetris eqvln. Not much use for kids though, esp ones hooked onto PS/2, XBOX consoles. Also they send u an emailed statement, which seems redundant given that online Alert system on the settop.Read More

I've read a couple of good DishTV reviews here on MS. U must check them. The usual issue seems to be with installation service & follow-up. Some issues also with quality of settop on offer - the Kaon box seems to have problems, Zenega preferred. The digital cable is also an option - Hathway has inst...allations all around my building, & clarity is good. IMHO if you are not too cheezed with your cable guy, hang on to check what bundles TSky launch in Nov. Once Sun & Star come on board things should get competitive. DishTV should shape up by then as well.Read More

Do you still work for Fox ?’Balanced reporting’ is not a term you’d apply to these half-wits, even if you stretched the term across the ’pond’

nice review, Debashis. I have the Tata-Sky service & have a review too. The Thomson STB has only RGB (no Progv / S-video), and HD seems to make little difference to pic clarity. That said in Bangalore we've recently experienced 5 mins of blackouts everytime it starts to rain very heavy. I can't say... the cust care was great (it took a few days for the installation guys to schedule me in), and they actually installed the antenna facing SW (even with the compass), while I was telling them my worldspace antenna facing SE was correct. But their IVR system to charge your scratch card seems to work well. And if they move this stuff online, I will feel truly blessed. All the best, and once again thanks for a good read!!Read More

BTW, skipped my earlier post but the digicomp does support HD @ 16:9 aspect perfectly well. We have one of those 32' Sony DRCs, with Progressive scan, and HD is not noticeably different. I'm comparing with DVD of course, as we've never experienced digital broadcasts before. Cheers

Thanks, guys!! Let me try to clarify some of the pts raised. Daya..The Rs3000/- cost is all-inclusive ie. digicomp, mini-dish & digicard. All these are the property of TataSky, as per their helpdesk. As I understand it they can take these back if u don't wish to continue basic subscription. Or more... likely, they can add more concentrators on the mini-dish to provide for more users. The manual is pretty vague on this. Installation is Rs.1000, and u pay thru' the scratch-card. Apparently the box is a decoder for the signal, so it is proprietary. Interesting thing is it's software / firmware updates itself through signals from the satellite. There are no outputs besides the RCA & RF, so I'm not sure what you will record with. Of course u can connect it thru a VCR. The RF comes in at Channel 68, and is not quite as clear. Yeah!! Showtime should be just that - SHOWTIME. Hope they price it reasonable. SUN will bring in their channels EOM, or atleast that's the street buzz. Socrates, are u trialing IPTV or do u have any f/back. somehow I don't see these broadcasters trading in their value prop (aka lockin the box to their content) to expand the market on independent carriers. OK, I just read that again and it doesn't make much sense. Anyway hope market wins over greed!! Anyone with feedback on dish TV / IPTV, feel free to discuss.Read More
