petrol prices

I am really sorry to disagree with everyone; but in a democracy, we should be allowed to express our opinion freely howsoever it may be different from the mainstream.

There is a lot of hullabaloo related to recent hike in petrol prices. Although petrol prices increase are unwelcome, there are reasons and good ones too for such increase. One reason may be economic: the weakening of INR against major currencies of the world has made import costlier. Since difficult times give rise to extra-ordinary behaviour, we Indians can offset that with wiser choice of travel and lifestyle.

Secondly, there is a not-too-soft noise for reducing the taxes on petroleum. Really, the myriad number of taxes on petroleum would even trouble seasoned economists. But, a non-renewable and pollution-generating source of fuel must be taxed, and taxed very high. We as citizens can demand better facilities in return of that tax money; government should encourage and create conditions for alternate means of transport and give more travel options, except the private car only.

Sadly none of our leaders are visionary enough today to lead us through difficult situations. One group is out to give populist doses to the people which would always keep them crippled. Another group is pandering to the base sentiments for vested interests.

In a democracy, the people make the politicians. Looking at the quality of politicians, we collectively present a very sad face of citizenry.
