Understanding Self in Spiritual Realm ....Part1

By: jnan | Posted Feb 27, 2011 | Spirituality | 469 Views

Like most of us, I used to think earlier spirituality means isolating the self from external world by getting into meditation, perhaps by hard control of mind as we have learnt that from childhood from our family members, neighbours and environment. We have noticed various rituals our seniors used to observe and practise, particularly when they were ripe in age. So, such influence has etched a specific concept of spirituality and hence about holy men, whom we call spiritual masters.

I lived major part of life like most people, going through usual academic career, followed by professional and personal ones, while setting personal targets at different stages. It is, of course, necessary to fix a goal in life during all stages of journey through it, depending on priority, so as to retain self motivation and put enough efforts for that to achieve or at least reach closest to those targets. All along these targets have been external; nothing to do within and mostly driven through the feelings of being happy when each goal is achieved. This probably is common feeling among most of us.

I always felt inner urge from young age to find the purpose of our life as it cannot be rounded up with work, eat, sleep, do duties alone like we do in a routine manner. It may be a disciplined life, which is useful no doubt, but cannot be the ultimate aim for human birth. The turning point came when I lost of my wife suddenly (most unexpected way) as if she left unnoticed and had probably the right time to ponder about it again. Just few months before this incident, simply by chance, I came across TV discourses of Brahmakumaris in Aashta channel, which roused interest in spirituality with a feeling as if the answers I was looking for, could be obtained.

I came to know the source of our happiness and unhappiness. Most of us feel or state some time or other during our journey through life that we suffer so much for no fault of ours.Have we really tried to find out the reason for so? Common answer would, it is due to him or her or some incident in our life, which was unexpected that made us unhappy. So, it is true that we all suffer mentally due to deep feeling of unhappiness. Where and how this feeling is created ? Have we checked? No will be the answer as we do not know the true answer, except it is for him or for her or for that condition we suffered and felt unhappy.

This means, our happiness or unhappiness is entirely dependent on some one else or on external condition. If we delve inside, then we understand, our feeling of happiness or unhappiness is in our Mind and it is not created in our body or any organ like head, heart etc. Mind is not physical and we relate it as my mind ...then who is real "me". I Is it my body? Of course, not. We always state about our body like my head, my hand, my face...not me body, me hand or me face or me heart. Then we realize slowly that there is some entity, which is our true self rather than body, which is like a car. Car cannot drive by itself. It needs a driver. So, I am truly the "driver" of my physical body.
