Thinning hair could indicate female pattern baldness

By: DrBatrasHealth | Posted Nov 17, 2023 | General | 118 Views | (Updated Jan 30, 2024 07:23 PM)

Day in and day out you notice hair thinning and wonder where my thick and dense hair is. And don’t I have the hair that I used to have? Thinning hair may be a sign of female patterned baldness.

Although baldness is seen more prominently in men, women also have it. In fact, in a study conducted on 1004 women, 46% had female pattern baldness. (Source: Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venerology, and Leprology)

What is female pattern baldness?

Female pattern baldness is a type of androgenetic alopecia. If you have this problem, then must have inherited it from your family. If we separate the words, ‘androgenic’ means genes, and ‘alopecia’ means hair fall.

Difference between male and female pattern baldness

In female pattern hair loss, your hair may get thin all through the scalp but the hairline mainly remains whole. However, a receding hairline is one of the biggest outcomes of male pattern baldness.

Another difference is that women with female pattern baldness cannot go completely bald. Such is not the case with men exhibiting male pattern baldness. One more big difference is that women won’t get bald in female pattern baldness. This is not the case with men experiencing male pattern baldness.

Three stages of female pattern baldness:

  • Small quantities of hair thinning when parting.

  • Broadening of hair parting like a “Christmas tree pattern”.

  • Thinning hair at an alarming rate so you may notice a see-through area on top of your scalp.

Other early signs of female pattern baldness:

Severe hair fall is the most apparent sign of female pattern baldness. In case you notice more strands than usual in your shower drain, combs, and pillow cases. As per American Association of Dermatologists, approximately 55-100 strands of hair fall per day is considered normal. Anything more than that can be disturbing and cause for alarm just like facial hair.

Risk factors associated with female pattern baldness:

  • Aging.

  • Family history of pattern baldness in both male and female.

  • Oral contraceptive pills.

  • Crash dieting

  • Nutrition, vitamin, and iron deficiency.

Is it just a cosmetic problem?

Many people are unfortunate to assume that hair fall is only cosmetic problem but female pattern baldness is a medical problem that can occur due to various issues like:

  • Thyroid problems: An overactive or underactive thyroid gland causes hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism respectively. The hormonal changes result in hair fall.

  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome: this hormonal disorder increases androgen levels in your body obstructing the hair growth on your scalp.

  • Emotional stress: situations like pregnancy, childbirth or recovering from prolonged illness, psychological trauma and weight loss can result in stress leading to hair loss.

  • Metabolic disorders: Hypertension and high blood cholesterol may be responsible for hair loss.

  • Medications: Anti-depressants or chemotherapy medicines are some other reasons for hair fall.

  • Menopause: Increase in Male hormones like androgens, may cause hair fall in menopausal women.

Therefore, if you are suffering from female pattern baldness, avoid parlor and visit an experienced trichologist.
