The Kolkata Quiz

After a long time I am again posting a Quiz, this time I wanted to do a series of city based Quizzes on major cities in India, and starting it out with Kolkata.


Why Kolkata?


Well considering the city is India's cultural, literary capital, the city where the Indian renaissance started, the city that laid the foundation for India's freedom struggle, the city where Vande Mataram was born, and the city where Giants once walked, Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, Subash Chandra Bose, Chittaranjan Das, Satyajit Ray, Mother Teresa. The city of Rosgulla, Durga Puja, Hooghly and Eden Gardens, so here it is on Kolkata.


1) Of the 4 bridges across the Hooghly in Kolkata, 3 are named after Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, after whom is the 4th bridge named?


2) Robert Clive gifted a Giant Aldabran Tortoise to the Alipore Zoo in Kolkata, which lived for more than 100 years. The name of the tortoise is that of a well known concept in Hindu philosophy, what is it?


3) It was originally called the Dalhousie Square, located near the Writers building, and has been renamed after 3 young revolutionaries, who were convicted and hanged, by what name is it famous.


4) This locality in Kolkata gets it's name from a word meaning "quarters of the potters", and gets it's name from the fact that it was created as an exclusive area for the potters during the British Raj. It is now famous as the place where the idols are made for the Durga Puja. Which one?


5) If you were visiting Jorashanko Thakurbari in Kolkata, whose birth place and ancestral home would you be seeing?


6) The Udyanbhati in Cossipore, also known as the Cossipore Garden House, was where a very famous person spent his last days and passed away there. It is now a memorial in honor of this person, whose disciple is equally famous too. Who?


7) The Chowrasta in Barisha, is a 4 way crossing that leads to Tollygunge, Behala, Shakuntala Park. This is believed to be the neighborhood of another famous person, whose house is located close to this. Who?

Starting off as a market for textiles and yarns, it is now one of Kolkata's largest wholesale markets, where everything is available for a price. 10) Apart from the Hooghly, in which other place in Kolkata would you find a mini replica of the Howrah Bridge, also called the Mini Howrah Bridge. It is the campus of a renowned institution all over India, and famous for it's lakes too.
