TELL ME THE WHOLE STORY

One may think of the Hole story advertisement being currently on aired by producer of a mint product, or better story of 18 holes by Tiger woods confession. But I am sure to disappoint many on this count. My musing is about recruitment trends in modern days :

Campus Recruitment : It beats me how the industry is still continuing the practise of recruitment through campus, even during recessionary days. Does it not signfy that the principle of supply and demand is being violated. It is okay when there is a boom to splurge on recruitments by doling out handsome incentives and salaries.when it comes to cost cutting during recession at least the companies should adopt a transperant practise of advertising for job vacancies, so that all the students can apply or go through the grind of recruitment test etc. The practise of visiting campus and recruiting does not seem to in sync with times. Or does it signfy that the recruiter wants to build a fall back arrangement with the institute concerned. I had always a sneaking suspicion the very idea of campus recruitment was adopted vigourous so that their own salaries are hiked by the management. The logic is simple when you recruit a new comer with a salary equalvalent to what you are drawing at present, you give a clear indication that you are being under-paid, calling for revision of scales etc. It also beats me how can a fresher bargain, when he does not have experience or proven value ? I hope the trend will change in future with companies advertising specific no of vacancies and later carry out the common written exams, and for group or personal interview companies could visit the campus, if essential after the first filteration process. But the ideal method would be to carry out the entire process in the campus of the company rather than college. The current practise is that of God visiting the disciple rather than the other way around.

The lop sided approach of recruitment has obviously lead the institutes to devise an ingenious methods of selecting students for a management course. I was surprised other day when my nephew being a fresher was asked by a management institute how many years work experience he has. Is it not an indirect way of fleecing the student, if he has work experience naturally he can afford to pay more donation.

Another novel way trying to lure industry is to arrange for guest lectures. I was surprised some institutes seek one time guest lecture from Industry experts. How will student benefit from one time lecture it beats me. Rather it would be headache for the person involved in lecture, he will be contacted time and again by students to help them out for research ( project work ) or recruitment in future. The right method adopted during our times was to have weekly lectures for 2 hours from industry experts. The colleges want to maximise their returns without caring for the students learning process by engaging such techniques and the so called industry experts who fall for the bait naturally are unethical lot, who want to make a quick buck and get undue recognition. Brands are built over a period of time, with sustained effort and resources. Are the institutes short circuiting the process ?

Well my musings are for the industry to set right its practise and not fall prey to the commercialisation of Education. Industry needs to nourish Education institutes in the right manner otherwise the entire apple cart of management is reversed. In a highly competitive environs many fall prey to unethical practise of boosting numbers. Meeting deadlines is the name of the game.
