Heavy smokers who successfully quit smoking are going to enjoy another advantage in their bodies, namely the cholesterol profile that gradually improved. A recent study shows, increase good cholesterol known for the body comes when stopped smoking, despite problems with weight gain after smoking the last cigarette.

Up to 20 percent of deaths from heart disease today are caused by cigarette smoke. However, researchers do not yet have sufficient understanding of why it happened. Smoking may affect the cardiovascular system in various ways, including decreased levels of oxygen and trigger a process of damage to the heart itself. Several studies in small scope also showed evidence that smoking can lower good cholesterol (HDL) and increase bad cholesterol (LDL).

This is expressed by principal investigator Dr. Adam Gepner from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison, United States, told Reuters Health. Cholesterol is a yellowish fat-like wax produced by the body, especially in the lung. Cholesterol is one instance of fat that circulates in the blood.

The function of cholesterol for the body is to make sex hormones (essential to the development and function of sexual organs), adrenal cortex hormones (important in metabolism and salt balance in the body), vitamin D (to absorb calcium in the body), as well as bile salts (helps intestinal absorbs fat.)
