Only Private Sector Banks - a solution ?

By: a_kusari | Posted Feb 27, 2008 | General | 474 Views

People knowingly or un-knowingly canvass for " Only Private Sector Banks " in India now a days meaning that the Public Sector Banks are no good now and should be merged to leave the arena only for the Private Sector ..  !!

Do these kind of people think that the cities and towns alone do not represent India ? Do they know that most of the people live in Semi-urban and rural India which may not see a bank branch of a Private Bank in next 30 yrs when they equally deserve to get the feel of a Bank in their locality ..!!

How far this stand is correct .. may the vast population of India be surved by the Private Banks alone ... have they a real interest to serve in those areas where "revenues" are less and even "nil" in some case> Some of them are :

  • Payment of Pension to the retired Govt. and Defense people

  • Paying Teachers' Salary including Primary teachers

-Serving "Savings Customers" with negligible balances

-Paying  stipend to students of schools and colleges

-Paying "un-employment allowances" in some states

-Paying workers salary through extension counters

-Giving small loans to farmers and artisans including small business etc. etc.

And above all, if there was no Public Sector Banks, these Private Banks would not have adopted all "un-fair means" to expolite their customers more and more > Some of them :-

  • Higher service charges in all fields

-Higher and higher charges for counting of notes

-Higher collection and incidental charges

-Higher minimum balance charges

-Higher pressure by goons for loan recovery

-Higher interests in all loans etc ???

May we discuss these aspects for the benefit for all even those people who do live in romote places, works hard for a square meal, in fields and factories ? Those who may not express themselves in writing letter to editors of News Papers, posting "Blogs" on the net, may not come in contact with the Ploicy makers  and so on ...?
