A few comments on a very interesting article by Pritish Nandy in today’s (2nd Sept.) Times of India. The article is titled as ’Poop films, a new craze in Bollywood".

We have many intense Bollywood movie goers among our MS friends and it will be nice to receive their take on this article.

Nandy starts with so called "Poop films".. or better so called "Blockbuster movies"of these days. This article cracked many a myth of modern days "Blockbuster" bollywood movies.

Just trying to list few salient points of the article (its a long article) alongwith my takes. By the way, Pritish Nandy heads the "Pritish Nandy Production" house, which has given us quite a few interesting movies like, Jhankaar Beats, Kaante, Pyar ka side effects, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi... to name a few.

  • Long before such a movie (example "Singh is ..) is released, we wittness a massive media blitz, Stars are seen in all kinds of TV shows and above all the movie is tagged as "Blockbuster" before it is even released!

  • All kinds of rumuors are being spread about the massive budget, stars fees etc.. and it is wittnessed that these movies vanish from the theaters after one week or so..

  • It seems many people who have put their money behind such a film sink.

  • It is interesting to note how many of these movies are actually pictured, devoid of any particular scripts.

  • Even iinteresting to note that suddenly a Star of such movies is pronounced by the media as the

current box office King!

  • As one week or so passes by, everyone involved forgets about this movie and another such movie starts beaming everywhere...

  • He has even mentioned how many of the so called "Film Awards" are manipulated.

He has sadly pointed out how many of these stars avoid "meaningful’ (with a good script) movies just because of money. Gone are the days when the stars used to ignore many a nondescript roles just because of one good role.

The main looser is Hindi Cinema, as many a movie goers gets attracted by this massive media bombardment and goes atleast once to see such a movie and gets distraughted. Another movie, ( may be a good movie) which couldnot boast such a massive media exposure gets lost in between. "Johnny Gaddar" may be an example (quoting Nandy).

May be this trend will continue for some more time to come. Hopefully the rich tradition of great (in all sense) Bollywood movies will continue to come out and we will also keep sponsoring such efforts.

I strongly recommend all Bollywood film lovers to have a look into this article and yaa.. don forget to post your take on it.
