And welcome the 20+ heroines like Kareena Kapoor, Amrita Rao, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif, Asin Thottumkal, Deepika Padukone, Kangna Ranaut, Genelia D’Souza, Jiah Khan and Anushka Sharma.
Youth is always a requirement for Bolly movies as it is a visual medium. This young brigade lends freshness and are talented too. They are not only the present but the future of Bolly movies. Let’s take a peek at where they are today.
Kareena Kapoor (28): She has an impeccable lineage. And her acting talent is beyond doubt. The Czarina of Bollywood has come into her own and how. Popularising size zero has not made her a zeroine. In fact, she is scaling new peaks each day. She has set new standards with her live-in relationship with Saif Ali Khan Pataudi. And she is in 2008 top 10 tax-payers list too. KambaqtIshq (2009) has been moderately successful. What else can she want or need? Nothing but her fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Main AurMrs Khanna, Milenge Milenge, Three Idiots and Kurbaan. In her case, luck needs her.
Amrita Rao (28): She is almost waif like. One must say, wafer thin. You blink and you may miss her modest frame. But she has oodles of acting talent. Beginning as a model, her debut flick Ab Ke Baras (2002) was not impressive. IshqVishk (2003), Main HoonNa (2004) and Vivah (2006) brought her both hits and acclaim. Heyy Baby (2007) and Welcome To Sajjanpur (2008) made her establish herself as an actress. And with ShortKut (2009) she has changed her image from simple to sexy. Another Madhuri Dixit in the making.
Priyanka Chopra (27): This former Miss World 2000 has definitely added to the fun quotient in Bolly flicks. Beginning with Tamil movies, she jumped on to Bolly bandwagon and tasted success with her second flick Andaaz (2003). She has another hit in Aitraaz (2004). Hits became a regular with her in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), Krrish (2006) and Don (2008). She followed these successes with Fashion and Dostana (2008). 2009 too appears to be rosy with both Kaminey and Shahid Kapoor spreading cheers. Let’s wait for What’s Your Raashee, Pyaar Impossible and Alibaba Aur 40Chor. She sure is Ms Hit Wagon.
Katrina Kaif (25): She holds the magic wand in her hand. Blockbusters have become associated with her. What she touches turns into magic. Even Akshay Kumar cannot deliver hits without her. She is the lucky mascot for many heroes. After Shridevi, she is the sole ‘hero’ to deliver hits with/without pairing with saleable heroes. Luck and success are both courting her (along with Salman Khan). From Boom (2003) to zoom (NewYork, 2009) was just hits away. Can’t wait for Blue, Ajab Prem Ki GajabKahani, De DanaDan, Rajniti and Padosan. She is definitely the undisputed Queen of Bollywood.
Asin Thottumkal (23):She comes from the Malayalam speaking state of Kerala. And her entry into Bollywood was with a blockbuster hit Ghajani (2008). Suddenly, everyone wants to know about her. Heroes are eager to pair opposite her. With London Dreams opposite Salman Khan, she has shifted bag and baggage to Mumbai. After all, it makes sense to be near dreams, work and lolly.
