Kayam Churana: Don't touch it !!!

I am a 55 year old male and like many of my age, have a constipation problem. I know that issabgol (the natural fiber) is the best nature has to give for this problem and churan is the best for digestion, therefore I was totally fooled by the continuous advertisements of Kayam Churana.

They claimed that this product was an “Ayurvedic Medicine” and is “Useful in chronic constipation, headache, hyperacidity, etc”. They mention all this right on the product. Then they have the audacity to add, “Can be taken without harm”! Well, I will tell you my experience. Since this was not available off the shelf in my regular pharmacy, I asked them to get me two bottles. Though the marked price is Rs.48.75, it retails for much more!

I started taking one tea spoon (mixed with water, as directed) every evening. (It prescribes dosage as: "1/2 to 2 teaspoon as per requirement at bedtime with water"). It tastes horrible and one has to swallow it in one gulp. At first I found that the laxative took over 16 hours to take effect. Then as my body got used to this it started to give results within 8 to 10 hours. (I had to time it well so that I would not get into embarrassing situations!).

After that I found that the contents of my stomach would not exactly empty in one go. I would have to go to the toilet at least 3 or 4 times in a day. I experimented with not having the medicine everyday and found that the constipation would reappear. I wondered if I was getting addicted to it, but I was still not perturbed as it stated that it would cause no “harm”.

Then I started noticing blood in my stool. Even this did not worry me in the beginning since I have seen this phenomenon off and on for the last 10 years. However one day in the afternoon, I was shocked to find my pants all wet and when I went to the bathroom I found it was soaked in blood! I really did not yet connect it with Kayam Churna till I started getting cramps in my abdomen. I had almost finished the first bottle and that is when I decided to see if this bleeding and cramps would stop if I stopped taking this “Ayurvedic Medicine”. And to my relief it did.

I have no idea what exactly are the ingredients in this product, but I sure know they are not good for the body. My advice to everyone is, be very careful of these well advertised Ayurvedic products which are easily available. They could be very harmful.
