Jack or Master

By: somaat | Posted May 08, 2009 | General | 307 Views

This has been one of my age old dilemmas. Why is it that some people like to be Master of something while some remain content with being Jack of all trades (The ones who don't belong to either category can be excused for not understanding my dilemma.)

I, for my part have generally liked to try my hands at seveal things but never too deep headlong into anything to acquire mastery. It's only my profession in which I need proficiency and I do consider myself expert there. But generally in other fields of life, I am not a master anywhere. I have been content with that till now.

Take studies for example - Biology interested me in my early days but it never became a passion. Later I liked computer programming but that became an all consuming passion. Why one would keep me awake at nights without making me regret, while for the other I never had enough drive to get to it's core. I still wonder if it's the lack of enough exposure about the subject that stops you from attempting to master it or is it just in our DNA....

I don't know the answer and that's why I am rambling here...

But whatever it is --- One thing is for sure...

And that is that you are definitely wondering why should I be posting something like this for my first diary post...

Well...Sometime back I read about a term Bird watching and out of curiosity I looked it up. To my surprise, there are 424000 pages on google about it. I did finally understand that for most people into bird watching, it actually started off as a hobby but it consumed them later. Off late I had taken a sabbatical from ~life~ due to my studies but now I am back, to be a religous bird watcher. And this is where my dilemma began. I seem to be getting consumed by this hobby and it's almost turning into a passion. Only time will tell if it actually remains so or will I revert back to my "Jack of all" trait...

Final word --- If you have read this far about a lunatic's ramblings, you are sure to be a master of human psycology at least :)
