Idols are brought to houses on Ganesh Chaturthi and after 10 days of pooja these idols are immersed back in the ponds/lakes/ canals.river/sea depending upon the local conditions. Now a days big pandals are erected where Lord Ganesha is established, prayed for and then immersed in water.
This signifies that we are born from Earth and return to Earth after death.
Ganesha Chaturthi is being celebrated since ancient days of Shalivahan,. Chalukyas dynasties.Chhatripati Shivaji , the Great Maratha Warrior started Ganesha Pooja to preserve our culture and unity.Peshwas followed it.
