DAAWAT-E-ISHQ V/S KHOOBSURAT!

This Friday will see the clash of two medium-budget and not-so-high-on-buzz films. It’s the word of mouth that will be play a crucial role in attracting audiences for both these films. My views:

DAAWAT-E-ISHQ: Produced by Yash Raj Films, Daawat-E-Ishq stars Aditya Roy Kapur and Parineeti Chopra and is directed by Habib Faisal, who made the much-loved Ishaqzaade and Do Dooni Chaar. The trailer is decent and so are the songs. The manner in which the essence of Lucknow and Hyderabad are captured is quite interesting. Also, the food element can be appealing for viewers. Sadly, the buzz for the film is very limited. In fact, till 10 days ago, there was hardly any excitement at all for the film. The actors then undertook a ‘Food Yatra’ covering prominent cities between Mumbai and Chandigarh and trying out popular delicacies and meeting fans in these towns. This gave the film the much-needed exposure. Also, the dialogue promos and the new promotional strategy, that is associated with dowry element of the film, have been impressive. But still, excitement is limited and this will affect the opening. But if word of mouth is good, surely things can change for the better for Daawat-E-Ishq.

KHOOBSURAT: It’s the remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Khubsoorat(starring Rekha). Sonam Kapoor reprises Rekha’s role and Pakistani heartthrob Fawad Khan is the lead actor. Kirron Kher and Ratna Pathak Shah too are seen in interesting roles in the film. The trailer is hilarious and Sonam looks in good form in the film. She is very impressive in Engine Ki Seeti. In fact, songs of the film have caught attention. Engine Ki Seeti is a hit while Naina is soulful. Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai hasn’t quite caught on but the quirky and unique Maa Ka Phone has been loved. The film looks like a clean entertainer and can attract family audiences. But again, the buzz is limited and it’s only the positive audience reaction that can help.
