4 DIVERSE FILMS THIS WEEKEND!

It’s amusing…in September there were only4 releases but in October, at least 12-15 films are expected to release. Anjaana Anjaani (AA) would have released last week but the makers decided to play safe by not clashing the release with the Babri verdict (that the verdict got delayed is another story!). AA which would have been the solo release of last week now will arrive with 2 big films. In all 4 films hit the screens tomorrow. Best thing is, 3 of them are well-promoted and all 4 of them belong to diverse genres.

ANJAANA ANJAANI: One of the most awaited films of the year, all the more because of Ranbir, who is the new super star after the stupendous success of Raajneeti. Ranbir-Priyanka chemistry is electrifying and it has aroused considerable curiosity among the youth. Songs, too, are well-received esp the title track and Hairat. The director is Siddharth Anand who has a great track record (Salaam Namaste, Ta Ra Rum Pum, Bachna Ae Haseeno). The film should have the best opening at the BO of all the 4 releases (but not in South where Enthiran/Robot will be moviegoer’s first choice). However, like any other film, it has to be a good product to sustain in theatres.

ROBOT: Another anticipated film that has been in making since more than 2 years. The curiosity factor is very high since the charismatic actor Rajnikanth is there and also because he is paired with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan this time. Unlike Rajni’s last film Sivaji that was released just in Tamil, Robot is releasing in Hindi as well as Telegu. The Hindi dubbed version might not turn out to be a huge success as majority of die-hard Rajni fans will see the film in the original Tamil version. And there are not many non-Tamil fans of the superstar. But yet, the eye-popping promos and the concept of the film will ensure that the Hindi version gets decent amount of audience.

KHICHDI-THE MOVIE: There are many television sitcoms that have assumed legendary status but none was turned into celluloid, unlike the trend in West. Khichdi-The Movie emerges as the first such TV Show that has been made into a movie. The promotion has been good and promos promise unlimited laughter. Also it’s a clean comedy and hence is a complete family film. Although it has competition in the form of AA and Robot, it need not worry as its diehard fans will surely not miss the film. Also it is reasonably budgeted and will easily recover its costs!

BENNY AND BABLOO (BAB): Any film starring Kay Kay Menon interests me and BAB is no expection although it looks like a B-grade product. It has a fresh idea (drawing parallels between dance bars and 5-star hotels) and can turn out be good if handled well. It also stars Rajpal Yadav, Riya Sen and Shweta Tiwari and is directorial debut of Yunus Sajawal, writer of popular films like Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Jodi No.1, Ek Aur Ek Gyarah, Life Partner, All The Bestand the upcoming Golmaal 3. But commercially, the film has no chance due to stiff competition and negligible promotion!
