KIOCL has set up and operating a Captive Power Plant at Mangalore. In Captive power plant we have three nos. of 12V46 (9.36MW each) DG Sets manufactured by Wartsila, Finland. Each engine is provided with one Charge air filter set.
Power Plant at Mangalore. In Captive power plant we have three nos. of 12V46 (9.36MW each) DG Sets manufactured by Wartsila, Finland. Each engine is provided with one Charge air filter set. Each set consists of two primary and secondary filters.
The charge air system supplies the engine with clean combustion air. The air is sucked through the charge air filter and silencer to the turbocharger compressor side, from where the air is forced into the cylinder via the air cooler.
Initially all the engines were fitted with Trox-O-Mat oil wetted type filter. Those filters were found ineffective in the extra ordinary dust condition of the operating area of our CPP. During 1999, the engine manufacturer proposed to change the oil wetted filters into oil bath type filters to encounter the excessive dust condition. This was offered to KIOCL free of cost. KIOCL installed the Charge air filters viz.AUTOMATIC OIL BATH FILTERS (Multiduty) manufactured by AAF INTERNATIONAL. This oil bath filters also got secondary filters called Dripak filters. The total installed quantity of multiduty filter was 6nos and each filter is fitted with 15 secondary filters each.
The filters got damaged during 2003 and KIOCL planned for replacement with a better one in phased manner. KIOCL came across a party called Lambard Cleanair Private Limited, who had established themselves in Indian market. Their technology is supported by Locker Filtration Limited, England. KIOCL procured Two stage Autoflo self cleaning oil bath air filter . Model 600LA/5-27+ bag filters (single outlet) from M/s.Lambard and the system was installed in DG#3 on 03-12-2004. It is observed that Lambard filter system (Primary and secondary filters) has following advantages over multidty filters (AAF)
a) Longer life for primary and secondary filters: Better material. Oil does not reach the secondary filter.
b) Delta p is much lower. Efficiency is much higher compared to AAF.
c) Can handle extreme dust condition.
d) Better service and spare availability: AAF has not given any service and no spare for the primary filter.
