Dubai has been home to the tallest building in the world - Burj Khalifa for years now.

However, it's obsession with tall skyscrapers just doesn't seem to come to an end.

Dubai began construction work for a tower which will stand higher than the Burj Khalifa on Monday.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, Gulf emirate's ruler graced the groundbreaking event of The Tower at Dubai Creek Harbour with his presence as the construction workers laid down the foundations for the skyscraper.

The structure is expected to get completed in 2020. With the Dubai expo to will be held in 2020, it will be the perfect time for the launch of the ambitious project.

The soon to be world's tallest beauty has been designed by Spanish-Swiss architect Santiago Calatrava Valls. The tower will have observation desks providing 360-degree views of the coastal city.

The contract of turning this vison into a reality lies in the hands of Dubai's developer giant Emaar properties.

While Emaar has not revealed the exact final height of the tower, it will of course be higher than 828 metres( height of Burj Khalifa)

The tower is rumoured to have an estimated cost of around$1 billion(900 million euros).

In April, Emaar had released a statement saying that the tower will be slender with the apex moulded like a minaret
