Are we alone in this Universe????? (Updated after reading some more works of Carl Sagan and Hawking)

People who have too much time on their hands (or who are in a spot of trouble) often ask themselves the question “Why are we alive? What is the purpose of existence”. To them, I can safely say that this post will not be an answer to questions. Rather, it will probably serve to be some sort of consolation or condolence that somewhere, someone is exactly in the spot you are in, albeit at a different point of time. When I was a child, I often tried to encompass into my mind the extent of the universe. Whether infact it had any physical boundaries or not. If the universe is infact inside say, physically defined boundaries, what exactly are those boundaries? And more importantly, what lies outside those boundaries. Its something which cannot even be fathomed. The universe, in the current state, and with our level of knowledge about it, is pretty much unexplained as it is, thinking about what could be lying beyond the boundaries of it is something which we cannot even begin to think about. But sitting alone, a couple of times, I tried to think of the universe as an all-encompassing unit. A unit which is not only spread over the 3 dimensions of perpetual length, width and depth, but also spread over the 4th dimension of time. This 4th dimension still confuses me to a great extent, but it is way out of my IQ to write or comment about this 4th dimension. It is rather the first 3 dimensions, which I (in my own opinion) can talk about. Perpetual length, width and depth. No boundaries. Emptiness and Black Space. The huge black void which we collectively know as the The Universe. We’re nothing to the Universe. Nothing at all. It doesn’t have the time or the inclination to worry about us or our existence. The universe doesn’t care whether we pay our taxes or not. Its job is to exist. To exist perpetually and when it dies, to be born again.

Being born out of a pin point by an explosion called the Big Bang, and imploding into the same pin point by way of an implosion called the Big Crunch. That is what the universe is about. But if that’s the beginning and the end of The Universe, then whats the “Before” and the “After”. What existed before the Universe did? What existed before the Univese was created out of an explosion? More emptiniess, the same “Black Space”? Then what did the explosion really create??? Nothing! If the explosion called the Big Bang created the same thing, that was already existing before it, then it didn’t create anything new!!!

Which brings me up to the next logical point, that if the Implosion is again going to crunch up the entire Universe into a pin-point, then what will exist ‘After’ it? By ‘After’ here, I don’t want to refer to the 4th dimension of time, but the previous 3 physical dimensions. What after the implosion? What remains? The same emptiness? The same huge void of black space? Then what exactly is the Universe? It must be special somehow, for it to have a beginning and an end. Or else it would have simply existed…….. for eternity, before eternity, and after eternity. But it is not so. I believe that maybe, contrary to popular belief, we exist alone! Or to be more precise, I believe that Intelligent Life can be only found on our planet at this point of time. Sure, there may be an odd single celled organism lurking under the soil or water of some planet in some far away galaxy which will have life-inhabitating or near-life-inhabitating conditions. But Life, the way it is on Earth. I believe we’re the only one. So what happened exactly, why are we the only ones alone in this Universe? I believe the answer to that is pretty obvious. It is US. We’re the reason why we’re alone in this Universe. By we, I’m not referring to the people on Earth right now (atleast not yet), but We as in, the “Intelligent Life”.

Yin-Yang, that is the concept of duality. Good-Evil, Air-Water, Light-Dark. Duality exists, to maintain a balance. If the perfect balance is not maintained, then the achievement of “standard prescribed conditions for existence” becomes unachievable. What we’re doing on a Micro level today, we’ll be doing on a Macro level tomorrow. That is the reason why we’re here TODAY. We are making the same mistakes the previous inhabitants of some planet in the universe had made. We are, in the search of never ending sources of energy probing more and more into the unknown until the cataclysmic explosion which ends life sets its deadly fangs upon us. Then we’ll be dead……. Until that odd single cell-organism on some remote planet spawns more complex life by co-joining cells and adapting them to the conditions of that planet. Then finally there will be a day when primitive life in the ‘intelligent’ state is born on that planet, and then the vicious circle to garner more knowledge and energy will start again and together they’ll be the reason for their own downfall and destruction. Until on some other planet another single celled organism suddenly decides to adapt and reproduce!
