10 Extinct animals rediscovered

When an animal is declared extinct we know that there is no possibility of spotting them again. Luckily, some species have been spotted after being declared extinct like the phoenix, we have these animals back in the record.


Presenting a list of 10 such phoenixes:


Pygmy Tarsier


This nocturnal primate was declared extinct in the early 20th century. It was in 2000, that the existence of this species was ascertained when the scientists accidentally killed one while trapping rats in Sulawesi, Indonesia. Considered a data deficient species since the observations were made on the three specimens then discovered in 2008.


Javan Elephants


Javan Elephants were considered extinct until 2003 when scientist discovered the genetically distinct Borneo Pygmy Elephants’ likelihood of being the descendants of Javan Elephants. According to the study, these elephants originated from Java, the Javan Elephants habitat, and just like their predecessors they can take down foliage of up to 330 lbs. a day.


Worcester’s Buttonquail


This bird, otherwise presumed extinct, was unknowing recorded by a film crew while capturing a bird trapping in 2009 at Luzon, Philippines. Unfortunately, this rare bird was sold for food and no sightings have been observed since then.


Miller’s Grizzled Langur


Scientist’s got more than they anticipated when they set up cameras in the Indonesian jungle contemplating to capture images of orangutans and leopard and stumbled upon these rare creatures believed to be extinct.


Costa Rican Variable Harlequin Toad


Also known as the clown toad was rediscovered in 2003 near Quepos, Costa Rica. This species that inhabited the regions of Panama to Costa Rica are considered extinct in Panama.


Takahe


New Zealand indigenous flightless bird was assumed extinct in 1898 after the last remaining four specimens were killed. On November 20, 1948 Geoffrey Orbell spotted the bird near Lake Te Anau and now there are a few hundred living specimens.


Large-billed Reed Warbler


This 1867 lost species was sighted again in 2006 in Thailand. Later, 11 avians of this species were found in the museums wrongly named. A breeding site of the avian has been found in Tajikistan.


Caspian Horse


Declared extinct in 7th century, these Iran native horses were accidentally rediscovered by Louise Firouz near the Caspian Sea who mistook them for ponies owing to their small stature. A Caspian breed remains dating back to 3400 B.C. was found which makes them the oldest known domestic equine contenders.


Beck’s Petrel


This medium-sized long-winged seabird was unseen since the 1920s. The sighting of this species was reported in 2007 by an Israeli ornithologist who photographed 30 of them on a group of islands near Papua, New Guinea.


Thylacine or Tasmanian Tigers


80 years ago in the 1930s, these aborigines of Australia – Tasmania and New Guinea were surmised extinct. Now researchers have their doubts as certain credible witnesses allege to the sightings of the tiger and are scavenging for evidence of these marsupials being alive.
