Don't take this lying down. Go to customer court. Sue them under invasion of privacy and possible misuse of personal data and exposing you to possible identity theft. Write to the action lines columns.

Horrified to read your experience with Airtel. Its a pity how customer service is almost non-existent in India. They lure your money in, but once you become a customer, you are treated like a beggar. All this in the so called 'land of courtesy and hospitality'. Hmpph.

Glad to meet a fello dolphin user. As to your question, I personally believe that for most people in Delhi, it is not a matter of choice. It is a matter of habit or what one's cooler cousin or hip friend is advising! :) You see, dolphin came very late on the scene. By 2001 every one on th...e streets had already an airtel mobile or an Essar (Hutch before its trendy reincarnation) connection. Then there was an ubiquitous pager service that stuck around for quite long. When dolphin came in, people distrusted it because of the govt. tag. Later, trump trumpeted in and still there were no takers. It made no sense actually to shift from one mobile to another at that time as the losing costs were significant.
Now, when Trump is gaining in popularity, a majority of the users seek advice from their mobile-enable near-dear ones. These are the guys who have stuck on to the private operator for many years. So you can guess which side the decisions go in favor of.
There are ofcourse occasional risk-takers and eccentrics who will opt for Trump. These have probably no 'cool' friends to influence them or heavily weigh the economical pros and cons before taking any step.
That would be me. That would be the people who take the pains to come to mouthshut and check out the reviews before throwing in the money.
