@navin: Everything is important in a film. Every dialogue, every extra, every prop, every shot, every light, every piece of music should have some purpose - something which contributes to the film. Hence yes, the supporting 'white actors' are important to the film.
(Incidentally, do you know that ...in 1999, Dame Judi Dench won an Oscar for 'best supporting actress' for an 8-minute role only in 'Shakespeare in Love'?)

About shooting in NY: bringing contextual familiarity can add a lot to a film, which this film didn't do. Would you like to watch a film on 26/11 which has almost nothing about Bombay?
Cinematography: lack of a jerk does not equal great cinematograhy. Bollywood is past that stage, and these are professional films, not amateur ones. Watch any of Santosh Sivan's films for great cinematography.
