Finally a modern Indian author who understands what good (possibly great) fiction is all about- stories. And if it's stories you're after then Vikram Chandra has copious amounts to offer in his first book- Red earth and pouring rain. Taking its name from a 4th Century Tamil poem, Chandra's no...Read more

Hey guys, thanks for the comments. much appreciated. kalyani, sorry to disappoint on the stylistic front. the problem lies, most likely, in the way i read poems and the way i gauge and judge them. basically, when i read a poem, the most important thing for me is the image and emotions that ar...e evoked within me as opposed to the stylistic aesthetics of the poem itself. to break it down into a sum of its parts like a car, in my opinion, is doing it a grave injustice. but these things are subjective so thanks anwyays, for pointing it out. I normally write my reviews as impersonally as possible and try to be as objective towards a book as I can be. But Neruda, by God, makes me break all those rules. Sometimes, you come across something in life that leaves you so awe-stricken that you lie in bed slack-jawed and pensive for hours on...Read more

The Culture? What is it? Who is in it? What's it all about? Well to really understand Iain M. Banks’ Science-Fiction writing one needs to understand the Culture. Essentially, the Culture can be described as ''...a group-civilisation formed from seven or eight humanoid species, space-living...Read more

Well, it's not easy rating something as subjective as your own sense of smell so I thought I'd just provide my own perspective and see how it goes. Well then, in any old order: 1. Fantasy? Horror? Sci-Fi? Steampunk? What’s in a name anyways? China Mieville’s “Perdido Street Station” goes beyond genres in just the same way Rushdie did with “Midnight’s Children”. The plot is set in the imaginary world of Bas Lag, with the main ac...Read more

I was expecting great things having read all the other rave reviews of Pankaj Mishra's debut novel (or is it his 2nd after Butter Chicken in Ludhiana?). They seemed to promise it all- a wonderful story, beautiful insights into India and especially Benares (Varanasi), wonderful prose, enchating c...Read more
