1st hand experience. Review on d2h

I had to buy new set top box (STB) to give justice to my just bought Sony bravia LCD. I started researching on various available STBs in Mumbai. I am lucky to live here as you get several options to choose from. Tata sky and Dish TV are two leading companies in this business and both make claims of providing best quality, service and variety of channels. But I was expecting something more than this. Like everyone my focus and priority was channel subscription fees.

I feel basic pack offer is more important than add-on as they are actually cash cow for companies.

For a first time STB buyer it can get very confusing to select a right package, as cable operators offer all channels for fix cost while D2H offer several different kind of packages. However for me it was easier, as I only watch Discovery, NGC and some news channels. Although, mom watches more TV than me, her choice also does not go beyond entertainment channels. So overall I had very limited channel selection and hence I found D2H option sufficient for my requirements. The second important reason to go for D2H was MPEG 4 technology which offers way better sound and picture quality than mpeg2. Lot of STB now come inbuilt with the DVD players which I found as an interesting option initially. But after visiting shops and checking their functions I realized that it was not worth to invest in this player. I download lot of movies in different types of format, which this player was not able to support. So I decided to go for normal STB than the one which comes inbuilt with DVD player.

Meanwhile the shop owner came up with another DTH offering which was from Sun. As per my study Sun HD DTH costs Rs 10000/- with free 1 year subscription (it’s still expensive). However suddenly shop was ready to give the same STB for just 5000!!! So I got interested and started several questions about it. After repeated attempts shop owner told me that there in a specific scheme Sun HD DTH box comes free with Samsung LCD/LED tv. But several customers already have DTH at home and hence don’t opt for Sun DTH. Due to which he keeps STB and latter sell it to other customers at lower cost(illegally). For a moment I thought to buy it but when he told me this, “If Sun representative enquires about Samsung LED/LCD tv, tell him that you have sent it to your village and you wish to use this box with your Sony TV, ” I found it fishy and decided not to buy it.

Finally after lot of efforts I decided to go ahead with Videocon STB. After buying Videocon STB within two hours I got congratulating sms and within few minute a call from technician about installation. I was very surprised and happy to get fast service. He asked me to keep photo copies of ID proof and residential proof ready. He turned up within 15 minutes at my home and without losing a moment he started his work. Both the guys who had come looked absolutely professional in their work. Installation was done in an hours time DTH started operating on my TV.

Results are in front of me and I am impressed by their service and quality reception. I will definitely recommend Videocon D2H to Mumbai users.

What I didn’t like, though was technician’s approach 1. Unnecessary talk about Videocon-how how its great than others (where as I had already bought one) 2. Language -I was talking to them with respect (in ‘aap’ terms) and he was talking to me in terms like ‘tu ye kar’. He was trying to be friendlier than required. 3. He made lot of mess in my house and kept his tools on my bed, which I didn’t like. One more thing about the product I want to highlight is that it takes 4-5 sec to start; which annoys me at times, but I think I will get used to it.

Overall I'll recommend videocon D2H STB.
