Initial Impressions: I placed an order for Videocon D2H High Definition on 1-Jan 2013 and opted for the South Platinum HD package. It was installed on 2-Jan 2013. So, my initial impression is that Videocon has been responsive towards a new customer and have displayed a good sense of urgency.

Why did I choose Videocon? – Well, I did my research by visiting the websites of various Cable TV providers and amongst all companies, Videocon seemed to offer the best deal, when it comes to High Definition channel packages. As of 1-Jan 2013, in comparison to other providers, Videocon offers you more number of HD channels as options and Videocon’s HD package options works out cheaper. In the South Platinum HD package, I get 20 HD channels(no other DTH provider matches this).

Ease of Use and Setup Box Options: Setting up the SetTop Box was a breeze. The Set Top Box provides a HDMI output, to leverage the High Quality HD signal. The HDMI cable too is supplied by Videocon - I was quite pleased about this?. The user interface to Manage and Operate the SetTop box is intuitive and easy – no issues around these aspects. There is a 1-touch option to switch between Hindi and English interfaces(for the menus), in case you were looking for this information.

Does HD offer better quality? When you are viewing channels in HD, you will see and feel the difference in quality, between Standard Definition(SD) and High Definition(HD). Do be informed that the number of HD channels currently available is limited, although I’d like to re-iterate that Videocon offers the most number of HD channels within a package option.

Customer Service: “Videocon D2H” was professional in raising the work order number and communicating the same. The technician who installed the kit was also skilled, although he charged me Rs 200/- for using a coupler to join the cable. For a new connection, I was aware that Videocon would’ve provided this for free(particularly when my own cable at home was used).  I hope Videocon will further educate their technicians. I understand that it is a continuous challenge to educate local technicians about these issues and hence, I’m not looking at this too critically. Finally, my South Platinum HD package was valid for 12 months, but the “My Account” screen was indicating that it was valid for 8 months only. When I contacted the customer service personnel, they were polite and courteously informed me that the offer of 1 year will be activated within 48 hours of activation. And, it was indeed activated within 48 hours. I was also able to reach the customer service representative without a long wait(my wait time was less than 30 seconds across 2 instances).

Summary: Overall, I am pretty happy with Videocon so far. I only hope that they live up to the same standards, in the long run too.
